WATCH YOUR NEWSSTANDS! I'm excited to announce that yours truly is now one of the forecast columnists for The Mountain Astrologer magazine! My first column is in the new August-September issue -- I've gotten my subscriber's copy by mail already, and the new issue will be in bookstores soon if it's not there already.

My column starts with an overview of what's going on astrologically in August and September, then goes into more depth about the daily planetary influences for both months. It's a great way for you to keep in touch with what's going on astrologically, and be able to plan ahead a few weeks, too. I hope you enjoy it and find it helpful -- let me know!

IF YOU'VE GLANCED at the list of highlighted aspects in today's Journal, you already know that we have a lot going on astrologically this week -- which means that it will be especially important to take the time to do whatever works best for you when it comes to centering and balancing yourself.

For me, that means making sure I get in both my meditation time and my walking or running time first thing in the day, as top priority before I take on any of the other tasks on my list. Whatever methods work for you, I recommend making the commitment this week to "make it so" -- then, even if things get complicated later in the day, you'll be able to approach them from a more centered place within yourself.

"COMPLICATED" may actually be one of the best words to describe the energies of the week. On Monday, for instance, aspects involving Mercury indicate our minds will be very imaginative and intuitive (Mercury trine Neptune) -- but we may want to be cautious about making important decisions or speaking arbitrarily, since our thinking will be colored by our emotions and our objectivity may not be strong (Mercury in Cancer semisquare Jupiter).

On the same day, a Sun-Chiron trine helps us open our hearts to trusting in the power of the universe and in the power of love. But at the same time, a Venus-Saturn square indicates a testing time for relationships (or perhaps finances, also ruled by Venus). Venus in Leo could have penned the lyrics for the song "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," but Saturn in Scorpio wants us to look beneath the surface to see what is "really" going on, and to be willing to make hard decisions, if needed.

And that's just Monday.

AT THE CORE of the week's energies is the alignment between Mars and Mercury in Cancer, which occurs as both planets oppose Pluto on Wednesday. Mars represents action and desire, while Mercury represents our thinking and communication processes. When these two planets get together (as they do at least once a year), we usually expect a more direct alignment between our thoughts and our actions -- or, perhaps, an increased ability to state our truth with courage and forthrightness.

However, the opposition to Pluto makes things a great deal more complex. Deep emotions and defensiveness can more easily be triggered with this aspect, and what begins as a conversation could quickly turn into a power struggle.

THE BENEFITS of this type of situation may be hard to see at first. But this opposition from Pluto is allowing us to see -- and hopefully resolve -- deep-seated issues that have been festering beneath the surface. It is important to bring these issues into our awareness so that we can honestly assess them.

Pluto lays it all on the line. It helps us see what is really going on, so that the solutions we ultimately devise are not just short-term fixes, but are designed to restabilize systems from the foundation up.

THE NEW MOON also occurs on Wednesday, at 6:24pm PDT. This is after the exact Pluto-Mars opposition (7:12am PDT) and Pluto-Mercury opposition (4:39pm PDT), but before the exact Mercury-Mars alignment at 9:14pm PDT. This timing puts the oppositions into the energy of the lunar cycle that is completing, and the energy of the alignment into the new lunar cycle.

This attention to the exact timing of these aspects might be called a "mere technicality"; but I'm hopeful that it indicates positive potentials for our New Moon cycle. Based on the insights we gain from the oppositions on Wednesday, and our ability to purge the demons of the past, we can more fully align our hearts and minds to go forward successfully from here.

THIS POSITIVE POTENTIAL is enhanced by the Water Grand Trine that appears in the chart for the lunation. In a grand trine, three or more planets form a large triangle in the chart, and all are working in harmony together. This particular configuration involves the Sun and Moon in Cancer, Chiron in Pisces, and Saturn in Scorpio.

Astrologer Bil Tierney tells us that a Water Grand Trine helps us "respond to subtle undercurrents of life easily. Powers of detection are above-average, suggesting some degree of psychic sensitivity. Impressionability can be transformed into a creative, productive asset once we are able to harness the delicate emotionality."

With Chiron in Pisces involved in the grand trine, this new lunar cycle can help us gain greater trust in how our lives are unfolding, even at times when we are stressed or cannot see what the outcomes may be. Saturn in Scorpio will assist us in staying on course with our deeper desires, based on a clearer knowing of our truth. And the Sun and Moon in Cancer help us have love and compassion for ourselves and for others as we journey this planet as one family.

THE SABIAN SYMBOL for the location of the New Moon speaks to that concept of "one family" in a unique way:

"A woman and two men castaways on a small island of the South Seas: The focalization of complex inner potentialities in harmonic and concrete relationships."

Astrologer Dane Rudhyar sheds this light on the meaning of this symbolic image:

"The woman and the two men represent the three-fold aspect of the personality -- the emotional must relate to both the spiritual and the mental. Somehow the three-fold consciousness has to develop a harmonious and well-integrated modus vivendi (a specific way of life). If successful, this will release powerful energies."

It is certainly one of our challenges as we journey this earthly life, to integrate various aspects of our personalities into a Whole that is able to manage our lives most effectively. It appears to be a part of the opportunity of this new lunar cycle that we take one more step in this process -- and, if we are successful, “powerful energies” will be at our disposal as we go forward from here.
