JUPITER is very active this week, forming an opposition with Chiron on Tuesday and a quincunx aspect with Uranus on Thursday. Jupiter is known as the "Greater Benefic" in astrology, so we tend to associate the planet with all good things. And, this can often be true, that we experience Jupiter's influence in a very positive way.

In his book The Changing Sky, astrologer Steven Forrest talks about each of the planets as both Teacher and Trickster. In describing Jupiter as Teacher, he writes that the planet's gift is "The ability to both envision and to seize upon new possibilities and potentials for the future."

However, there is also the Trickster side of Jupiter. Mr. Forrest writes that the trap associated with a Jupiter transit is "The temptation to let ourselves be lulled into lassitude and foolishness while basking in the warm feelings created by overconfidence, arrogance, or still-incomplete success."

IN OTHER WORDS, with Jupiter's influence increased this week, we want to be open to new experiences, to allow ourselves to think optimistically, and to take advantage of opportunities. But, especially with Jupiter in service-oriented Virgo, we also need to be humble, discerning, and grateful, so that our potential success is not undermined by overconfidence, an inflated ego, or lack of attention to details.

Virgo also has a very analytical side, so we'll also want to watch a tendency to over-think or become too critical of ourselves or others if everything is not going "perfectly." Perhaps this is the lesson behind the Jupiter-Chiron opposition on Tuesday. Chiron in Pisces wants us to remember that although we may sometimes believe it's up to us to figure everything out, we also need to rely on faith, trust, and our unseen support system as equal participants in our journey.

WE TEND TO experience a Jupiter transit as a time when something in our lives -- whether we deem it positive or negative -- increases in magnitude. This ability to enhance or exaggerate is in keeping with Jupiter's designation as the largest planet in our solar system.

The perception of an event being a "plus" or a "minus" is always subjective. At times we can feel uncomfortable simply because something is new and different, or unplanned. This may be the lesson involved in the other Jupiter aspect this week, the quincunx with Uranus.

URANUS transits are known for bringing in unexpected events, and for challenging us to perceive reality in new ways. As Jupiter forms a quincunx with Uranus on Thursday, we may be challenged to make an adjustment in our routines, or in our need for consistency, or even in our definition of an ideal scenario.

Uranus also opposes the asteroid Juno earlier in the week (on Tuesday), so some of the changes that occur this week may involve themes ruled by Juno: our commitments to significant others, our desire for fulfilling and stable partnerships, sacrifices we may make for these relationships, and the need to rise above grasping and possessiveness that can arise from insecurity or fear of abandonment.

It is interesting to note that in Roman mythology, Juno was the wife of Jupiter. This draws an energetic line of connection between the Uranus-Juno opposition on Tuesday and the Jupiter-Uranus quincunx on Thursday. We'll have to see how that subtle link plays out.

THE RELATIONSHIP THEME continues next Sunday, when Venus, the goddess of love, enters Libra, the sign of cooperation. Venus' transit through this sign supports our finding new levels of balance and harmony in our relationships for the next four weeks (Venus enters Scorpio on December 4).

Venus also conjoins the North Node on Sunday, a last major aspect for the Moon's nodes before they change signs next week. This alignment helps us focus on the future rather than the past, and can help us see the benefits of developing more of the positive qualities of Libra as we go forward: the ability to create mutually supportive, interdependent relationships; team orientation and letting go of competitiveness; focusing on synergy (working together to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts); and tactful communication that also encourages feedback from others.

In peace,

Pam
