Wildfires Will Become Worse Thanks To Decades-Old Liberal Policies, Says Fire Expert Who Predicted Uptick In Blazes
Wildfires Will Become Worse Thanks To Decades-Old Liberal Policies, Says Fire Expert Who Predicted Uptick In Blazes
Reuters
- Former President Bill
Clinton’s land management rules and other liberal policies paved the way
for future debilitating wildfires, fire expert Bob Zybach told the
Daily Caller News Foundation.
- Zybach warned of
potential disastrous wildfires shortly after Clinton signed a slate of
rules in the mid-1990s that drastically reduced logging and road
creation on federal lands.
- Zybach’s comments come as California, Oregon, and parts of Washington deal with catastrophic wildfires that have killed 26 people and destroyed buildings.
Former President Bill Clinton made a
significant change to federal land management nearly 30 years ago that
created the conditions necessary for massive wildfires to consume
portions of the West Coast, according to one fire expert who predicted
the problem years ago.
Shortly
before leaving office in 2001, Clinton limited the ability of the
United States Forest Service to thin out a dense thicket of foliage and
downed trees on federal land to bring the West into a pristine state,
Bob Zybach, an experienced forester with a PhD in environmental science,
told the Daily Caller News Foundation. The former president’s decision
created a ticking time bomb, Zybach argues.
“If you don’t start
managing these forests, then they are going to start burning up. Thirty
years later, they are still ignoring it,” said Zybach, who spent more
than 20 years as a reforestation contractor. He was referring to
warnings he made years ago, telling officials that warding off prescribed burns in Oregon and California creates kindling fuelling fires.
Such
rules make it more difficult to deploy prescribed burns, which are
controlled burns designed to cull all of the underbrush in forests to
lessen the chance of massive fires, Zybach noted. Years of keeping these
areas in their natural state result in dead trees and dried organic
material settling on the forest floor, turning such material into
matchsticks soaked in jet fuel during dry seasons, he said.
Zybach’s comments come as wildfires continue churning through parts of California, Oregon, and Washington, media reports
show. Fires have killed 26 people in West Coast states since August,
including 19 people in California, and have culminated in more than
half-a-million people evacuating Oregon, a number representing roughly
10% of the state’s overall population.
Roughly 100 massive fires
are blazing Saturday in the West, including 12 in Idaho and nine in
Montana, the National Interagency Fire Center said Saturday. All told, the wildfires have churned through more than 4.5 million acres in 12 states.

Shortly before leaving office, Clinton introduced the Roadless Rule that
restricted the use of existing roads and construction of new roads on
49 million acres of National Forest, making it difficult for officials
to scan the land for the kind of kindling that fuels massive
conflagrations.
The move was part of the Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP), a resolution adopted by Clinton in 1994 to protect forests from being over-logged.
Ten years before Clinton’s rule, the Fish and Wildlife Service placed the northern spotted owl
on the Endangered Species Act, forcing the Forest Service to adopt a
new policy that resulted in a greater reduction in timber harvests. The
amount of timber removed from federal lands plummeted, according to data accumulated in 2015 by the Reason Foundation.
An
average of 10.3 billion feet of timber was removed each year from
Forest Service land between 1960 and 1990, the data show. Those numbers
dropped between 1991 and 2000 and continued dropping — an average of
only 2.1 billion feet of timber was removed from the land between 2000
and 2013, according to the data. That’s an 80% decline.
“They’ve
gone and left hundreds of thousands of acres of burnt timber, a fire
bomb waiting to happen, standing in place because the black back
woodpecker prefers that habitat,” Zybach said. “It’s great for lawyers,
but it’s bad for people who breathe air or work in the woods.”
“The
prescribed burns are an ancient form of management for keeping the
fuels down so these events don’t happen,” Zybach added, referring to
Native American Indians who used controlled burns to ward away pests and
prevent wildfires from licking their homes.
The Clinton
administration’s plan to turn forests in the West into pristine land
free of human interference risked fueling “wildfires reminiscent of the
Tillamook burn, the 1910 fires and the Yellowstone fire,” Zybach, who is
based in Oregon, told Evergreen magazine in 1994, when the NWFP came into effect.
Western
Oregon had one major fire above 10,000 acres between 1952 and 1987,
reports show. The Silver Complex Fire of 1987 snapped that streak after
torching more than 100,000 acres in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness area,
killing rare plants and trees the federal government sought to protect
from human activities.
Fire Experts Agree: Prescribed Burns Are Critical
Overzealous
fire suppression across California are helping to build up wildland
fuels, which contribute to wildfires, according to Tim Ingalsbee, a fire
ecologist who began a career in the 1980s as a wildland firefighter.
The solution is “to get good fire on the ground and whittle down some of
that fuel load,” he told ProPublica in August.
“It’s
just … well … it’s horrible. Horrible to see this happening when the
science is so clear and has been clear for years. I suffer from
Cassandra syndrome,” Ingalsbee said, referring to the Cassandra
Syndrome, a Greek metaphor people use when they believe their valid
warnings are not heeded.
“Every year I warn people: Disaster’s coming. We got to change. And no one listens. And then it happens.”
Other experts have made similar arguments in the past.

Overgrown
grasslands, forests, and woodlands contributed to California wildfires
in 2017, Sasha Berleman, a fire ecologist, told High Country News that
year. “I’m more certain than ever that there’s a lot we can do between
now and the next time this happens to make it so that the negative
consequences to people are nowhere near as dramatic,” she said.
The
devastating fires that ran through California’s wine country in October
of 2017 killed 42 people and destroyed nearly 7,000 buildings, High
Country News noted.
The solution might be easier said than done.
Nearly 20 million acres in California, or an area about the size of
Maine, will need to experience controlled burns to limit catastrophic
wildfires, a January study from Nature Sustainability found.
Blaming Climate Change
Former President Barack Obama suggested in a tweet Thursday that California’s wildfires are a result of climate change.
“The
fires across the West Coast are just the latest examples of the very
real ways our changing climate is changing our communities,” Obama wrote in a tweet that included pictures showing how soot and ash from the wildfires are turning San Francisco’s sky bright orange.
Obama isn’t the only prominent Democrat tying the fires to global warming.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, published
a tweet Saturday that read: “The proof of the urgency of the climate
crisis is literally in the air around us.” Schumer included a link to a
Sept. 10 article from CBS blaming climate change for the fires.
Zybach
is not convinced. “The lack of active land management is almost 100
percent the cause,” he told the DCNF, noting that climate change has
almost nothing to do with fire kindling gathering across the forest
floors. Other researchers share his skepticism.
“Global warming
may contribute slightly, but the key factors are mismanaged forests,
years of fire suppression, increased population, people living where
they should not, invasive flammable species, and the fact that
California has always had fire,” University of Washington climate
scientist Cliff Mass told TheDCNF in 2018.
Mass’s critique came as Mendocino Complex Fire was spreading across California on its way to becoming the largest wildfire in the state, engulfing more than 283,000 acres.

NOTE: A previous version of this article stated that an average of 10
million feet of timber was removed each year from Forest Service land
between 1960 and 1990. The actual number was 10,3 billion. The article

Climate Change and Species Die-offs -what's up with that? What are we missing?
Why do Climate Activists only blame C02 and humans, yet never mention Big Agra or Monsanto or proven research about the impact of chemical toxins like atrazene changing sex of fish and neonicotinoids killing bees in the environment? (Follow the money...and where does it really go?)
Who funds the organizations that sponsor these activists?
What narrative is being drilled into our minds?
Why is there a massive wildlife and insect die-off?
Why is the media complicit in these omissions?
Recently there has a been a lot of news about Greta Thunberg speaking at the United Nations in regards to Climate Change. What is interesting is the people that surround Greta Thunberg one of which works for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Of course this could just be coincidence. 🤗

"THE SLOW EXODUS of planets leaving Capricorn continues this week, with dwarf planet Ceres entering Aquarius on Thursday. As you may recall, Ceres was part of the conglomerate that met for the Saturn-Pluto alignment. As Earth Mother goddess, Ceres brought issues related to the environment and agriculture to the meeting, dramatically revealing the ways in which climate change is affecting weather patterns and the ecology of our planet.
.
As Ceres traverses Aquarius from now through the third week in April, we are supported in thinking in new ways about environmental problems. And, since Ceres is involved in the care and feeding of people and animals, individuals with creative solutions may apply them specifically to ways in which we might feed all who live on the Earth, so that none need go hungry. Ceres will go retrograde later in the year, and will briefly revisit Aquarius from the last week of September through the first week of November."

How Climate Change Pseudoscience Became Publicly Accepted
(AP Photo/Brennan Linsley)
Political and corporate leaders gathered for the climate week in New York City have urged significant action to fight global warming. But, given the high costs of the suggested solutions, could it be that the suggested cure is worse than the disease?
As a liberal who grew up in a solar house, I have always been energy-conscious and inclined toward activist solutions to environmental issues. I was therefore extremely surprised when my research as an astrophysicist led me to the conclusion that climate change is more complicated than we are led to believe. The disease is much more benign, and a simple palliative solution lies in front of our eyes.
To begin with, the story we hear in the media, that most 20th-century warming is anthropogenic, that the climate is very sensitive to changes in CO2, and that future warming will, therefore, be large and will happen very soon, simply isn’t supported by any direct evidence, only a shaky line of circular reasoning. We “know” that humans must have caused some warming, we see warming, we don’t know of anything else that could have caused the warming, so it adds up.
However, there is no calculation based on first principles that leads to a large warming by CO2—none. Mind you, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports state that doubling CO2 will increase the temperatures by anywhere from 1.5 degrees to 4.5 degrees C, a huge range of uncertainty that dates back to the Charney committee from 1979.
In fact, there is no evidence on any time scale showing that CO2 variations or other changes to the energy budget cause large temperature variations. There is, however, evidence to the contrary. Tenfold variations in CO2 over the past half-billion years have no correlation whatsoever with temperature; likewise, the climate response to large volcanic eruptions such as Krakatoa.
Both examples lead to the inescapable upper limit of 1.5 degrees C per CO2 doubling—much more modest than the sensitive IPCC climate models predict. However, the large sensitivity of the latter is required in order to explain 20th-century warming, or so it is erroneously thought.
In 2008, I showed, using various data sets that span as much as a century, that the amount of heat going into the oceans, in sync with the 11-year solar cycle, is an order of magnitude larger than the relatively small effect expected simply from changes in the total solar output. Namely, solar activity variations translate into large changes in the so-called radiative forcing on the climate.
In the decade following the publication of the above, not only was the paper uncontested, more data, this time from satellites, confirmed the large variations associated with solar activity. In light of this hard data, it should be evident by now that a large part of the warming isn’t human, and that future warming from any given emission scenario will be much smaller.
Alas, because the climate community developed a blind spot to any evidence that should raise a red flag, such as the aforementioned examples or the much smaller tropospheric warming over the past two decades than models predicted, the rest of the public sees a very distorted view of climate change—a shaky scientific picture that is full of inconsistencies became one of certain calamity.
With this public mindset, phenomena such as that of child activist Greta Thunberg are no surprise. Most bothersome, however, is that this mindset has compromised the ability to convey the science to the public.
One example from the past month is my interview with Forbes. A few hours after the article was posted online, it was removed by the editors “for failing to meet our editorial standards.” The fact that it’s become politically incorrect to have any scientific discussion has led the public to accept the pseudo-argumentation supporting the catastrophic scenarios.
Evidence for warming doesn’t tell us what caused the warming, and any time someone has to appeal to the so-called 97 percent consensus, he or she is doing so because his or her scientific arguments aren’t strong enough. Science isn’t a democracy.
Whether the Western world will overcome this ongoing hysteria in the near future, it’s clear that on a time scale of a decade or two, it would be a thing of the past. Not only will there be growing inconsistencies between model and data, a much-stronger force will change the rules of the game.
Once China realizes it can’t rely on coal anymore, it will start investing heavily in nuclear power to supply its remarkably increasing energy needs, at which point, the West won’t fall behind. We will then have cheap and clean energy-producing carbon-neutral fuel, and even cheap fertilizers that will make the recently troubling slash-and-burn agriculture redundant.
The West would then realize that global warming never was and never will be a serious problem. In the meantime, the extra CO2 in the atmosphere would even increase agriculture yields, as it has been found to do in arid regions in particular. It is plant food after all.

How the Global Warming Scare Began by Meteorologist John Coleman (video) + John Rappoport: Historic: Trump rejects Paris ‘climate’ treaty

"A great scientist named Roger Revelle had Al Gore in his class at Harvard and the Global Warming campaign was born. Revelle tried to calm things down years later, but Gore said Revelle was Senile and refused to debate. John Coleman documents the entire story and shows how our tax dollars are perpetuating the Global Warming alarmist campaign even though temperatures have not risen in years and years."
Historic: Trump rejects Paris ‘climate’ treaty
by Jon RappoportJune 1, 2017
June 1, 2017, a day that will live in infamy for the liars, thieves, and killers of the new international economic order. They will see it as infamy, because their plan to sink the economy of America into a final death rattle has been rejected by Trump.
Fake climate science has been the lynch pin, justifying orders to cut CO2 emissions—but make no mistake about it, cutting emissions means cutting energy production in almost all countries of the world. THAT’S THE GLOBALIST TARGET. ENERGY PRODUCTION.
Get that one straight. The Globalist “utopia” isn’t a trillion solar collectors or a trillion windmills—it’s lights going out all over the world.
It’s LOWER ENERGY PRODUCTION.
That’s the monster hiding in the closet. That’s the outcome arch-Globalists are determined to foist on the planet, because that’s the society they want to control—poverty-stricken, abject, shuffling along a bleak path to nowhere.
Trump just stuck a knife in that scheme.
Yes, I fully understand the devil is in the details, but it is up to people everywhere, who have active brain cells and can see through the climate hoax, to take this opportunity to reject, publicly, the whole climate agenda.
CO2 is not the enemy.
Do the research yourself and see if there is any way these so-called scientists can assess, now or in the past, THE TEMPERATURE OF THE WHOLE PLANET.
The science is settled? There is no room for argument?
Freeman Dyson, physicist and mathematician, professor emeritus at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study, Fellow of the Royal Society, winner of the Lorentz Medal, the Max Planck Medal, the Fermi Award: “What has happened in the past 10 years is that the discrepancies [in climate change models] between what’s observed and what’s predicted have become much stronger. It’s clear now the [climate change] models are wrong, but it wasn’t so clear 10 years ago… I’m 100 per cent Democrat myself, and I like Obama. But he took the wrong side on this [climate change] issue, and the Republicans took the right side…” (The Register, October 11, 2015)
Dr. Ivar Giaever, Nobel-prize winner in Physics (1973), reported by Climate Depot, July 8, 2015: “Global warming is a non-problem…I say this to Obama: Excuse me, Mr. President, but you’re wrong. Dead wrong.”
Green Guru James Lovelock, who once predicted imminent destruction of the planet via global warming: “The computer models just weren’t reliable. In fact, I’m not sure the whole thing isn’t crazy, this climate change.” (The Guardian, September 30, 2016)
And these are but a tiny fraction of the statements made by dissident scientists who reject manmade global warming.
But regardless, never lose sight of agenda based on this “settled science.”
VASTLY LOWER ENERGY PRODUCTION FOR PLANET EARTH.
And at the same time, truly viable forms of energy production (e.g., water turbines, hydrogen), that could be brought online with but a fraction of previously chiseled government subsidies for oil and nuclear, are sitting on the shelf gathering dust—BECAUSE THE MODEL OF SCARCITY FOR THE PLANET IS WHAT THE GLOBALIST EMPIRE DESIRES.
Until such time as that model is destroyed, Earth needs energy, all the energy it can produce.
The climate criminals, working for Globalism Central, staged their Paris “Treaty” to try to torpedo that production. Obama signed on in Paris, knowing full well he was committing a criminally unconstitutional act by disregarding the vote of the US senate, a vote that was needed to confer legitimacy to the agreement.
There is nothing binding about the Paris “Treaty.” Nothing.
And today, Trump squashed it.
Might he re-enter negotiations and give away some of what he’s just taken back for America? Anything’s possible. But for now, the Paris Accord is a dead duck here in the US.
Trump is going to catch a new version of Hell for what he’s just done. But if enough Americans, and people around the world, realize the true implication of this historic day, and proclaim it, they’ll win. We’ll win. Each one of us.
Don’t give up. Don’t give in.

Lack of snow drives Iditarod start 250 miles north | NOAA + Blizzard Warning in Hawaii Delays Telescope Construction | The Weather Channel
Lack of snow drives Iditarod start 250 miles north | NOAA
Tuesday, March 10, 2015
Reviewer: Rick Thoman
The map at right show model-estimated snow depth across the state as of March 9, 2015. Snow depth increases from gray (one foot or less), to blue, to white (3 feet or more). Anchorage had only trace amounts of snow while Fairbanks was covered in 8-12 inches.
The historical Iditarod trail routes are shown in black. Upon leaving Anchorage, the trail splits into northern (used in even years) and southern (used in odd years) routes at the town of Ophir. This year, teams arriving from Fairbanks will intersect with the northern route at the town of Ruby. At Galena, the trail takes an additional detour, heading north to Huslia. As usual, the race will end in Nome. This year’s route is 18.65 miles shorter than the Anchorage-Nome route.
Except for three weeks in late January / early February, Alaska has been stuck in a pattern of mild temperatures since November. This is related to the warm-cold split that developed in the atmosphere over the Pacific and North America this past winter, which favored cold, snowy conditions in the east and left the western half of the country unseasonably warm and dry. If you happened to be in Fairbanks or Nome on February 24, for example, you would have been enjoying warmer temperatures (29°F and 28°F, respectively) than Chicago (16°F) or New York City (18°F).
Overall, Alaska experienced its 7th warmest winter on record this year, with an average temperature 11.1°F above the 1971-2000 average, marking the warmest winter for the state since 2002-03.
According to the Third National Climate assessment, Alaska has warmed more than twice as rapidly as the rest of the United States over the past 60 years.
Mild winter temperatures have brought hazardous freezing rain events in place of snow in many locations across Alaska. Anchorage closed out the month of February with only 1.1 inches of snow—the fifth lowest February snow total on record. As of March 1, the seasonal snow total was only at 20.5 inches. Meanwhile, over on the East Coast, Boston had its snowiest month of any month since records began with 64.8 inches of snow.
The 11-mile ceremonial start, which remained in Anchorage this year, was held on Sunday. According to news reports, city crews delivered up to 350 dump truck loads of snow the night beforehand. The next day brought “very un-Iditarod-like conditions,” with rain falling at a balmy 40 degrees. Fortunately for the competitive race, around 4 inches of snowfall fell in Fairbanks as recently as March 7, priming trail conditions at the new starting line.
Last year, sparse snow cover at several points along the trail exposed roots, tree stumps, and other hazardous obstacles. Lack of snow also made it harder for mushers to brake their speeding dogs. Only a few days in, several mushers—veterans among them—were forced to drop out because of injuries due to crashes.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for the Big Island's volcanic peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. The warning says that 5-8 inches of snow is possible above 11,000 feet through Thursday. Winds were forecast to be sustained at 45 to 65 mph with gusts to 85 mph possible.
The Associated Press said that construction preparations were to begin on the Thirty Meter Telescope near the summit of Hawaii's Mauna Kea until snowy conditions developed on Monday, closing the access road.
Ryan Lyman, meteorologist for the Mauna Kea Weather Center, told The Associated Press that winds were pounding the area and that snow was all over the place.
The telescope construction is a $1.4-billion project and should help scientists see some 13 billion light years away for a glimpse into the early years of the universe.
However, some are against the construction of this telescope since its being built near the summit of a mountain held sacred by Native Hawaiians. Last year, a groundbreaking and Hawaiian blessing ceremony were disrupted by protesters.
Is Hawaii Snow Unusual?
Though it may sound unusual to have snow in the forecast for Hawaii, it's more common than you might think.According to Ken Rubin, an assistant professor of geology and geophysics at the University of Hawaii, "it snows here every year, but only at the very summits of our three tallest volcanoes (Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala)."
"The snow level almost never gets below 9,000 feet in Hawaii during the winter, but since these mountains are taller than 13,600 feet, 13,700 feet and 10,000 feet, respectively, they get dusted with snow a few times a year. It rarely stays on the ground for more than a few days though."
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
