Caitlin Johnstone: Activism Without Inner Work Is Impotent | Steemit

Have you ever known someone who's intensely interested in helping people, but is so neurotic and unskillful that they mostly just make things worse?

"Stop!" you'll find yourself wanting to yell at such people. "Stop helping! Go help yourself!"
That's how I see most political activism today. So many well-intentioned people who want to help, and are so crazed by mass media psyops and cultural mind viruses that their energy seemingly goes everywhere but where it needs to. I'd like to say a bit about that here, if you'll indulge me.

It's really weird how many people in the political circles I move in are still running pretty much the exact same programs they were running in 2016. There are still former Berners acting like Hillary Clinton is the single greatest threat to America despite her being more or less irrelevant in 2018. There are still leftists and anarchists acting as though small neo-Nazi groups present a greater existential threat than the mainstream neoliberal neoconservative Orwellian power establishment.

There are still liberals running the same "OMG TRUMP NAZI LITERALLY HITLER WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE" script despite overwhelming evidence showing that the most evil things this administration has done are all extensions of Bush and Obama administration policies. There are still anti-interventionist Trump voters doing everything they can to compartmentalize away from the undeniable fact that this president is continuing and expanding the interventionist policies of his predecessors.

Even if you had a crystal clear understanding of what was happening in US politics in 2016, continuing to perceive through the lens of that same understanding today is blindness. And the more the world continues to change (and change it always will), the more blind you will be if you continue to apply your 2016 worldview to it.

Unless you've got a very clear sense for what's true and what matters and when you're being manipulated, your conceptual framework for understanding the world is almost a matter of luck of the draw. You were born into a particular family with a particular worldview, you have a set of life experiences which shapes your ideology, and that ideology forms a perceptual filter through which you consume information. That filter dictates what your media consumption habits will look like, what you'll take in as true, what you'll reject as false, and what you'll overlook or omit. You might get very lucky and coincidentally stumble into a worldview which happens to accurately reflect what's going on in the actual world, but before long that world will change, and your habitual relationship with information will necessarily lead you and reality along diverging paths.

The only variable in this process, as near as I can tell, is consciousness. Individuals who have done a lot of work bringing consciousness to their mental habits and inner workings are not randomly floating about at the whims of chance in a tornado of information, but are grounded in a clear sense of which way is up. This doesn't mean that everyone who has done a lot of inner work will necessarily share the same ideology (I often feel like I have more in common with someone on the other end of the political spectrum who has engaged extensively in self-discovery than I have with a fellow socialist who has not). What it does mean is that they have a much better chance of correctly figuring out when they are being told the truth, when they are being manipulated, and whether something is ultimately good or detrimental for the path they'd like to see society walk along. In a culture that is saturated with media propaganda, this is an indispensable asset for understanding the world.

People often ask me where my perspective comes from. What media outlets do I use? What books have I read? Who do I look to to get my finger on the pulse of the world? I usually just list off a few alternative publications I honestly don't use all that much and a few journalists I mainly enjoy because they sometimes say cool things on Twitter, but I only do this because I don't expect my real answer would be particularly interesting to the people asking the question.

In all honesty, I actually get my ideas about what's going on in the world by meandering around between conversations with my husband, conversations and debates I get into with people on social media, random articles and video clips that readers draw my attention to, bits of information I happen to stumble across, and all the while checking in with my guts about the whole mess as I go along. It's an ongoing and ever-changing process of taking in useful information and discarding unhelpful or harmful information, and it's guided primarily by the intuition and insight I've cultivated through many years of dedicated inner work.

I've got a picture of a guy meditating as the feature image for this article (credit to Toshimasa Ishibashi) because that image is a commonly recognized symbol of the pursuit of inner work, but that isn't to suggest that meditation is the only form that that work can take, or even that it's necessary.
Any method which brings consciousness to one's inner processes and mental habits is beneficial, including self-inquiry, mindfulness practices, yoga, energy work, and psychotherapy. If you remember that the goal is to no longer be at the whim of preconditioned mental habits in perceiving the world, it's easy to figure out what practices are useful toward that end by how acutely aware they make you of how little conscious control you have over your own inner processes. Anyone who's ever tried to still their mind in sitting meditation for the first time knows what I'm talking about.

This matters politically because activism without inner work is impotent. If you're beholden to the whims of your unexamined mental habits, any political activism you engage in will be determined by the groupthink of the people you're surrounded by (who are generally equally unconscious) and leaders who may or may not be guided by truth and compassion.

The difference between the activism of someone who has done a lot of inner work and someone who hasn't is the difference between a highly trained sniper and someone randomly firing shots in the dark. If you don't have a finely tuned inner truth compass you won't know where to push, where to pull, when to stop pulling and start pushing and vice versa, or where pushing or pulling would be a waste of energy. You won't have a clear sense of what's a worthy goal or what's just a politically convenient agenda for someone in power. You won't be able to see the gaps between the bars in the cage and know when and how to make a break for it.

No matter how well-intentioned you are, your good intentions are useless in this fight unless they are guided by cultivated wisdom. Plenty of well-intentioned people have thrown all their activism and energy into feeding into America's pernicious two-party system, into fanning the flames of Russia hysteria, into cheering for western interventionism in Syria or Iran.

No matter how intelligent you are, your intelligence is useless in this fight unless it's guided by cultivated wisdom. Plenty of highly intelligent people have poured all their cleverness into justifying neoconservative agendas, into staging coups to install brutal dictators, into creating engines of genocide.

The only thing that will enable you to use your gifts for the benefit of mankind is the guidance of clear inner wisdom, and the only way to obtain that is by buckling down, going against the grain of your unconscious habitual conditioning, and getting to work. The most compassionate thing you can do for the world is to clear your perceptual lenses of falsehood and delusion so that you can make yourself useful to it.

NFL Hysteria a Reminder of How the Elite Have Controlled Men for Thousands of Years

While I am well aware of the fact that things like sporting events are used to manipulate and control the masses, I do enjoy watching football and baseball, as well as Formula1 racing, and many other "sports" such as golf and surfing. (However, after Brady's witch hunt and wrongful persecution, like most New Englanders, I am NOT a fan of the NFL's penchant for drama, or of Goodell, and I never will be.)  Sometimes we can enjoy a distraction that allows us to decompress from the mundane "unreality", as long as we don't take it too seriously. I can't afford to see these games in person, so I especially enjoy watching at home, where I can hear and even rewind the play calls, without the distraction of  drunken, shouting pub pals.

As one who works with the body, I admire individual athletic achievement, regardless of team affiliation, and I marvel at what the body is capable of. Yet to me, ultimately, these are just games. I may not agree with everyone's personal choices in how to express their views, but I defend their right to express them. No one should be subject to character assassination over perceived slights. People need to lighten up and stop taking everything so personally. This article makes some valid points about the hysteria and self-righteousness, and the larger agenda, that IMHO, is taking all the fun out of the games.

NFL Hysteria a Reminder of How the Elite Have Controlled Men for Thousands of Years

By Isaac Davis, Waking Times

“So long as they (the Proles) continued to work and breed, their other activities were without importance… Films, football, beer and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult.” ~ George Orwell, 1984

Few things in American culture exemplify the fractured status of the collective psyche quite like the popularity of the National Football League (NFL). The NFL has become a de facto symbol of American freedom, while in reality it performs the function of the Roman circus, keeping the distracted from the extortion and crimes of state.

The NFL is sponsored by major corporations and by the U.S. Armed Forces. The games played in multi-billion dollar subsidized stadiums have become patriotically charged events, where spectators conflate fighting for freedom with watching games for entertainment. Men are told to pick a team and go to war for that team. Fans of different teams are mortal enemies. Military planes conduct fly-bys overhead, and participants are apparently expected to stand for the national anthem.

The euphoria of football has political value. The sport is an important program of deflection and subjugation of the natural male will to protect community and to fight against foe if necessary. This natural drive is captured and projected onto the tightly controlled images of the league, its teams, and its players. Games are presented as life and death struggles, while real-life issues are downplayed in favor of this never-ending drama.

Author William Cooper talked about the importance of football and other major league sports in a society where men must be pacified in order for the government to continually abuse the populace. Cooper’s perspective is that such enormous investment in the sport as a national pastime serves to distract the people from important social issues, deflecting blame away from the oligarchy for it’s contributions in destroying real freedom. When men’s passions are levied on sport, they pay little attention to the workings of the state, and have no gumption to resist creeping tyranny.

“What does the emperor do when the people have become restive, and when the people are asking questions, or when the people don’t like the policies of the emperor? He sends them to the circus. He creates a circus. He builds a giant coliseum and he begins to throw the Christians to the lions, and he has great chariot races, and football games, and basketball games. All to keep the idiots preoccupied with things that don’t mean anything in the scheme of the entire world. So that they don’t have the time to learn what the truth is, so that they don’t ever get smart enough to learn how they’re being manipulated. So that they don’t ever question the emperor.” ~William Cooper
“When a hundred and fifty of the most powerful men and women in the world can meet in secret… to plot the fate of billions, and nobody even cares about it, but six football players go to lunch together, and it’s in the headlines across the country, you have a reflection of the society in which that exists. And it is a sick, sick society that is doomed to self-destruction.” ~William Coope

And now, as ‘take a knee‘ protests have swept the nation, the NFL’s image has just been shattered in a catch-22 of brainwashing and cognitive dissonance. What originally started as a statement against the very real and destructive issue of police brutality has become a hysteria-fueled social movement and front page news. People are destroying thousands of dollars worth of team branded merchandise to demonstrate that complaints against the state will not be tolerated.

Now, the president has even chimed in, adding fuel to the fire and doubling down on the notion that the National Football League is first and foremost a patriotic organization. In this country, and in this sport, the government is not to be criticized. Not for brutalizing the citizenry with out of control police, or anything else.

Final Thoughts

In a society as rigidly controlled by a monolithic, top-down, know-it-all organization like the state, the archetypal energy of the male is manageable only by suppressing man’s natural drive to protect his community. This is how the elite have controlled men since the days of the Roman Empire.
When President Eisenhower left office, he warned us that the U.S. was changing under the pressures of a new world, and that a military industrial complex had emerged which would pose a sincere menace to a free society. Fast forward almost 60 years and his words are quite prescient.

“Now this conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence—economic, political, even spiritual—is felt in every city, every Statehouse, every office of the Federal government.
In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.”
~Dwight D. Eisenhower

The only path to peace is the Path of Love. 02/28/2015 by John Smallman

Saul Audio Blog for Saturdy February 28th
Humanity is at the tipping point, at the point of balance between sleep and full consciousness.  You have been told this before, I know, but it remains true, as you rock gently backwards and forwards between those two states.  It is a little like being at the edge of the seashore on a beautiful warm day in your bathing attire, ready to enter the water, BUT you still think it might be a trifle cold for bathing, so you teeter-totter at the edge trying to decide.  Well of course you have already decided to immerse yourselves, for you are wearing your bathing costume! It’s just a question of waiting for that intuitive “right moment” to go ahead and do it.  And that moment is very close, so do not allow your Light to slip back out of your awareness and seemingly drag you back into the darkness that is the illusion.

You are on Earth at this moment to awaken yourselves and humanity from the nightmare that the illusion has become, and in which you are entangled.  You cannot fail in this tremendous undertaking because you have aligned yourselves with God’s Will – you are always aligned with His Will, it is just that your consciousness of this has been hidden from you – and His Will is that you awaken.  God’s Will is always done which is why you cannot fail to awaken yourselves and humanity.
To many of you that seems to be an impossible task as you observe the enormous amounts of pain and suffering that continue to arise on your beautiful planet.  You all know people who are hurting, often seemingly most unfairly because of circumstances beyond their control, and you are all aware of the unconscionable suffering endured by those living in war zones.  You have all seen people driven by intense hatred or resentment adding to the suffering, and you ask yourselves “How can this possibly ever change, let alone in an instant?”  Well, you are forgetting two important things 1) the world as you experience it is illusory, and 2) God’s Will is for you all to live in eternal joy.

To awaken is your destiny, your inevitable and unavoidable destiny.  You know that, so do not let the illusion deceive you into believing otherwise.  Its purpose is deceit and confusion, and it produces this effect by convincing each of you that you are separate from each other, from the planet, and from God.  And your experiences within it appear to confirm this for you.  But, deep within yourselves, you know this is not the case, and so you hope, you pray, you meditate, you intend to be loving at all times, and this intention is bringing you and all of humanity forwards out of the illusion.

And you also know this, because all around the world you can see unmistakable signs of wakefulness, as people refuse to allow deceit, corruption, and secret divisive agendas to remain hidden as the worldly powerful attempt to maintain their control over everyone else.

It is no longer possible for the corrupt deceivers and their minions to keep their agendas and operations secret while they maintain a front of philanthropic concern for their fellow humans.  Many of you are well aware that a large number of so-called philanthropic organizations are anything but philanthropic.  They pay lip service to the causes they espouse to encourage you to contribute to them financially, and then use those finances to serve their real agendas.

But humanity is no longer a willing mass of mindless slaves subservient to the debt imposed on them by those who claim to have their best interests at heart.  Through the amazing work of a few, whose integrity is impeccable, the contemptible and utterly dishonorable behavior of those who have for so long occupied the seats of power is being widely exposed.  The foundations on which their corrupt empires have been constructed are crumbling rapidly, and so they attempt ever more ineffectively to frighten you into supporting them by claiming that the forces of evil (terrorism!) will overwhelm you all if you do not.

Wars are winding down.  Do not believe the mass hysteria of the mainstream media that would strongly suggest to you that threats of war have never been more real and that dealing with them forcefully has never been more urgent.  This is not the truth.  The world and all who inhabit it want peace.  Those in war zones even more desperately than anyone else.  If you have ever lived in a war zone you can surely understand this.  Do not be misled into believing that greater and more powerful armies need to be built and supplied with ever more powerful and destructive weapons to ensure world peace.  To believe that is to follow the path to insanity, so do not take it.

The only path to peace is the Path of Love.

There is no other way.  There can be no other way.  Force of arms, and the promise that it can protect you or anyone, is the path to self destruction on a vast scale, and your present technologies can indeed inflict incalculable damage and suffering upon you and your loved ones, in fact on every sentient being on the planet.

Turn away from military might and the utterly false promise that its supporters hold out to you.  Refuse to be cowed and overcome with fear because nothing in the illusion is real and can threaten your eternal and immortal existence.  Yes, of course your bodies can be severely damaged causing you much pain, but You can never be harmed.  If you engage in war-mongering, as some insane and seemingly powerful people are trying to persuade you is the way forwards, there will be further suffering on a vast scale . . . for those who are sent to engage in it, and for those in the areas where the destructive activities are to take place.

Small corrupt groups of powerful people have always attempted to make fortunes from war which others will engage in on their behalf.  Which side emerges victorious is of no consequence to them, and in truth no side can ever be victorious.  Enormous suffering will have occurred, ceasefires will be called for with increasingly raucous dissonance, and then put into effect with great fanfares.  But nothing will have changed, and the urge and enthusiasm for hostilities will arise once more.  And that and separation (divide and conquer) is what the illusion is all about.

Therefore continue to hold most firmly to your intent to be loving in every moment and in every situation.  Continue to hold your divine Light on high for all who choose to see It to see It.  There are far more than you can possibly imagine who have the eyes to see and who will see.  The laying down of arms is imminent, but your loving intent is an essential aspect of the divine plan to bring it about.
Remember, there is only Love.  Nothing else is real.  Open your hearts to the Tsunami of Love enveloping you and allow it to flow through you to all on the planet, because that is what is going to awaken you all.  It is irresistible, although you can delay acceptance of it . . . DONT!  You have slept for long enough already, so awaken into everlasting joy as you FEEL the Love that embraces you, and allow the illusion to dissolve.  It will, because nothing unreal can exist in the Presence of God, it can only appear to exist in the minds of man.

Your release from the nightmare is assured because it is your will let it go.  There is nothing within it to hold you to it except an unwarranted fear of being without it.  You know that you need it as surely as a fish needs a bicycle!  Therefore, let it go.

With so very much love, Saul.
