Your guide to planetary energies for
July 15 to 21, 2024
By Astrologer Pam Younghans

Aspects of Note this Week
Times and dates are based on Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). Add 7 hours for Universal Time (UT), but add 8 hours for BST.
Monday: Mercury quincunx Saturn, Sun square Chiron, Mars conjunct Uranus
Tuesday: Mars sesquiquadrate Ceres
Wednesday: Sun square Eris, Jupiter quincunx Ceres
Thursday: Sun sextile Uranus, Mercury trine Chiron, Sun semisquare Jupiter
Friday: Uranus sesquiquadrate Ceres
Saturday: Mars sextile Neptune, Mars enters Gemini, Mercury trine Eris
Sunday: Full Moon, Eris stations retrograde, Venus sextile Jupiter, Mercury square Uranus, Sun trine Neptune, Mars trine Pluto\

A DYNAMIC WEEK: We are entering a highly impactful week, a time of major transitions. The third week of July is destined to be historical right from the start, with the explosive Mars-Uranus conjunction perfecting on Monday, July 15. Not to be outdone, the closing scenes of the week's dramas are under the direction of a transformational, Pluto-powered Full Moon that perfects on Sunday, July 21.

Surprising or shocking events can occur when there are interactions between forceful Mars, the planet of personal will, and sideways-spinning Uranus, the planet known for breaking rules. Since the energies of their alignment have been building over the past week or so, we've already seen its effects in the larger world and in smaller ways, too.

Putting together the keywords associated with Mars and Uranus, we can expect: surprising or impulsive actions, shocking events that require urgent response, explosive episodes, unpredictable or antisocial behaviors, unrealistic risks, radical or aggressive tendencies, strongly independent or rebellious activity, and emotional extremes.

There are positives potentials of this Mars-Uranus influence as well: a sudden breakthrough, daring to step out into the unknown, standing strong in one's independence, courageous authenticity, and the willingness to begin anew, without a safety net. And, since the higher expression of transpersonal Uranus is the Universal Mind, we may also receive profound insights and innovative ideas that inspire a significant change in our life path as the planet aligns with Mars.

THE ALGOL EFFECT: As you may recall from my forecast for last week, the Mars-Uranus alignment is occurring at the same degree as the fixed star Algol, and is thus energizing the star's influence. Unfortunately, the darker side of Algol, which ancient astrologers associated with misfortune, danger, and violence, has been activated in the past few days.

If you missed last week's issue of this NorthPoint Journal and would like to learn more about the fixed star Algol and its impact on the Mars-Uranus conjunction, please click HERE to read my forecast for July 8 to 14, 2024.

FULL MOON IN CAPRICORN: We have two Full Moons in Capricorn this year, which occurs only rarely; the first was a month ago, on June 21, and the second is on July 21. As the Capricorn Moon opposes the Cancer Sun, we are challenged to be objective and rational, but also to be sensitive to the emotional needs of ourselves and others.

Next Sunday's Full Moon is outstanding for a few other reasons as well — most notably because the Moon will be very closely conjunct Pluto at the time of the lunation. Pluto is named for the god of the Underworld, and thus is the catalyst for major transitions in our lives, times when we move from one state of being to another. The dwarf planet often takes us through a symbolic process of death and renewal, similar to the experience of the mythical Phoenix, which magically regenerates after seeming to burn in the fires of purification.

As the Full Moon's energies begin to unfold toward the end of the coming week, we are drawn into a time of profound change. As the Detective planet, Pluto likes to reveal secrets, and as the Psychotherapist, it delves deeply into our psyches to uncover unconscious motivations and fears that have been controlling us from behind the scenes.

MAJOR CHANGES CATALYZED: Other aspects to the Full Moon will amplify our collective experience of its energies. Luna will be trine both Mars and Uranus, further activating the life-changing influence of their alignment. But, helping ease the way through providing inspiration and creative solutions, intuitive Neptune will be in harmonious sextile to the Moon.

However, the lunation will also be in hard square aspect to both insecure Chiron and to controversial Eris, which is very strong due to stationing retrograde on the same day. This arrangement of planets creates what is called a T-square configuration. T-squares correspond with times of increased tension and can result in irrational or impulsive behaviors in those who are especially affected.

As a general rule, Full Moons increase emotional reactivity, and this T-square will exacerbate those tendencies. It will be important to slow down, to be patient, and not to rush into decisions or actions. This T-square in cardinal signs will test our maturity, self-discipline, and self-awareness.

SOLAR ACTIVITY: The physical sun has recently been very active, giving us a major X-class solar flare (the highest level) and nine moderate M-class flares on Saturday, July 13. Solar flares are known to affect us on physical, mental, and emotional levels; having so many strong eruptions just as the highly nervous Mars-Uranus conjunction is reaching its peak can feel overwhelming for some.

Be sure to be very conscious in your self-care now. Drink extra fluids, especially electrolyte fluids. Stop to breathe more deeply whenever you sense tension or nervousness in your body. Spend time connecting with Nature in any way that you are able, and ground yourself into the earth. Meditate, rest, and get extra sleep if possible.

THIS WEEK'S ASPECTS: Here are my brief interpretations of this week's most important planetary aspects, day by day:

Monday
Mercury quincunx Saturn: We can tend to be somewhat pessimistic, judgmental, or incommunicative with this influence.
Sun square Chiron: Deep-seated insecurities or fears can trigger anger or other strong reactions today.
Mars conjunct Uranus: The Mars-Uranus alignment perfects at 7:04 a.m. PDT, when both planets are at 26°19' Taurus. Events unfold quickly and we can feel carried along in a wave of change. People may be more reactive or impulsive than usual.

Tuesday
Mars sesquiquadrate Ceres: This aspect represents a conflict between the need to be self-assertive and the desire to feel secure and safe.

Wednesday
Sun square Eris: Controversies are stirred and people could react very defensively today.
Jupiter quincunx Ceres: Dogmatic beliefs and self-righteousness can undermine our ability to achieve longer-term goals.

Thursday
Sun sextile Uranus: It is easier to be independent and forthright today, since we feel less emotionally withdrawn.
Mercury trine Chiron: Communication and the willingness to brainstorm can open the door to finding creative solutions.
Sun semisquare Jupiter: There can be a tendency to be too wordy, or to go too far in trying to explain our feelings.

Friday
Uranus sesquiquadrate Ceres: Breakthroughs occur that unsettle us on an emotional level, causing short-term nervousness or anxiety. It may be hard to visualize new possibilities if we are overly attached to old forms.

Saturday
Mars sextile Neptune: It is easier to act on our intuitive insights today.
Mars enters Gemini: Mars will be in the sign of the Twins from July 20 to September 4. During these weeks, we are more open to new activities and ideas. However, we will need to be aware of times when we are spreading our energies too thin.
Mercury trine Eris: Forthright conversations bring insights and help us be open to new ideas.

Sunday
Full Moon: The lunation is at its peak at 3:16 a.m. PDT on July 21, when the Moon is at 29°08' Capricorn and the Sun is at the same degree of Cancer. With Luna in strong aspect to all three transpersonal planets (Pluto, Neptune, and Uranus), an increase in frequency is possible but will take some time to adjust to on a human level.
Eris stations retrograde: Controversies are at their peak with dwarf planet Eris at a standstill today.
Venus sextile Jupiter: This heart-opening aspect supports easy communications.
Mercury square Uranus: Nervous energy is heightened. Insights are possible, but it may be best to write them down to take action on later, when conditions are more stable.
Sun trine Neptune: This trine enhances our capacity for empathy and compassion.
Mars trine Pluto: We are determined to take action, especially in the support of a cause we feel passionate about.

IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK: You may feel highly motivated to make significant changes in your life this year, and should have the courage, flexibility, and faith you need to "make it so." However, there are some obstacles to overcome, perhaps in the form of old patterns of insecurity or defensiveness. As you take responsibility for your reactions and learn to self-nurture, you are able to rise above these challenges. Over the next six months, you will be completing a two-year process of profound change that may have felt overwhelming at times, but which has been an important step in your becoming more empowered in some area of your life. This is especially true for those who have their birthdays next weekend, either July 20 or 21. (Solar Return Sun sextile Mars, semisquare Jupiter, square Chiron, sextile Uranus, trine Neptune, opposite Pluto, square Eris)

In peace, love, and gratitude,

Pam

A NEW YEAR BEGINS: Welcome to 2024! Based on the astrological influences, the coming year is going to provide us with a wide variety of life-changing experiences — ranging from major opportunities to significant challenges.

In my "Breakthroughs & Awakenings" webinar on Wednesday, January 10, I'll start with an overview of the entire year, including a graphic I've created showing the timeframes each important aspect is in effect. From the lineup of planets conjunct powerful Pluto in January-February, to a pivotal Total Solar Eclipse and the groundbreaking Jupiter-Uranus alignment in April, to the surprising Mars-Uranus conjunction in July, to the first Pisces eclipse in September, to impatient Mars opposing Pluto and then going retrograde in theatrical Leo at the end of the year, we're in for the adventure of a lifetime!

The rest of the webinar will focus on the planetary influences we'll be working with January through April, including that historic Jupiter-Uranus conjunction on April 20.
If you'd like to learn more, please see the full description on this page, or visit
https://PamJan-April2024.eventbrite.com

If you've already registered — I look forward to seeing you there! Please remember that all the information you'll need to attend, including the monthly calendars, will come from noreply@eventbrite.com

MONTH OF AQUARIUS: My next monthly astrology class, covering the Month of Aquarius (January 20-February 18), is set for Wednesday, January 17! The goals of this class are: 1) to go into more depth with the daily planetary aspects for the coming month; 2) to provide a short teaching and example of how transits work in our individual lives; and 3) to answer questions from attendees about their personal charts and transits. This last section is also instructional, since hearing about one person's experience with a specific planetary influence helps everyone understand their own transits, too.

DAILY ASPECTS: Here are my brief interpretations of this week's most important planetary aspects:

Monday
Venus square Saturn: With Venus in easygoing Sagittarius now, we have an increased need to feel free of attachments and restrictions. But realistic Saturn is square Venus today, reminding us that a responsible life usually requires that we follow certain guidelines and even rules. This aspect offers a reality check and challenges us to assess how we feel about our commitments, whether to a relationship, to a creative endeavor, or to a financial investment.

Mercury stations direct: After being retrograde since December 13, Mercury now turns to face the future. As the Messenger Planet slowly begins to move forward and picks up speed over the coming days, it supports our likewise making progress on plans and projects that may have been stalled or on hold for the past three weeks.

Tuesday
No major aspects are exact today.

Wednesday
Venus quincunx Jupiter: Moderation is key with this aspect. While the desire to settle an issue and simply be done with it is strong today, we will need to be careful of making too grand a gesture — whether it be in an effort to reconcile a relationship or to break free from all restrictions.

Thursday
Mars enters Capricorn: While the god of War is in Capricorn, from January 4 to February 12, "slow and steady wins the race." In general, we tend to be more cautious in our actions and slower to respond in anger. However, Mars in ambitious Capricorn can also manifest in a heightened display of authority and a lack of sensitivity to the emotional needs of others.

Friday
No major aspects are exact today.

Saturday
Sun square Chiron: Feelings of insecurity may arise today, especially in situations that require us to take charge or to be in a position of leadership. Hostility that is expressed under this influence is often a mask for fear. It will be beneficial to pay attention to the truth of our feelings, rather than judging them or trying to hide them from ourselves. Once we become aware of the frightened inner child who is driving our reactions, healing becomes possible. The space is then opened for us to sit down with that child and embrace them with acceptance, understanding, and love.

Sunday
Mercury trine Eris: We are not shy about expressing our opinions today. This can be a helpful influence for taking action on a new plan or project, especially one that fulfills a need to feel independent and free.

IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK: You may feel more restless than usual this year, with a heightened need for new experiences or to express your independence in some way. You may surprise yourself by your openness to changes in a specific area of your life, depending on the house placements of both your natal Sun and transiting Uranus. However, old insecurities and even fears may arise along the way, giving you the opportunity for greater self-understanding. Accepting that you have an inner aspect of yourself that is less than confident challenges you to embrace self-care in a way that may not feel natural for goal-oriented Capricorn natives. Please see the description of “Sun square Chiron” on Friday’s aspects list above for more guidance. (Solar Return Sun trine Uranus, square Chiron)

In peace, love, and gratitude,

Pam

THE PLANETS have great surprises and profound shifts in store for us in 2024! As we move through the year — and especially through the first four months of the year — we will engage with powerful cosmic forces that can permanently and positively redirect the course of our lives. Please join astrologer Pam Younghans for this “Breakthroughs and Awakenings” webinar as she describes the planetary influences we’ll be working with during January-April, 2024. Here are some highlights:

IN JANUARY: A shift in priorities and a new phase of societal change begins as the Sun and Pluto align in Capricorn and march side-by-side into Aquarius. At virtually the same time, radical Uranus stations direct and is trine Mars, supporting grand strides forward.

IN FEBRUARY: An innovative Aquarius New Moon heralds surprising changes. This effect is reinforced as three more planets make ingress into socially progressive Aquarius. The Full Moon toward month’s end requires us to model maturity and caution.

IN MARCH: The Aries Equinox foretells of a dramatic season ahead. It is followed by a Lunar Eclipse/Libra Full Moon that triggers new developments in relationship and legal matters.

IN APRIL: A Total Solar Eclipse/Aries New Moon marks a major turning point. The life-changing alignment between visionary Jupiter and ingenious Uranus is strong throughout the month, activating some of the “breakthroughs and awakenings” that inspired the title of this webinar. Pam will take us back in history to past Jupiter-Uranus conjunctions, shedding light on the energies we’ll be working with.

PLEASE JOIN US! This webinar is for everyone, whether you are a newcomer to astrology or have spent years in study. Before the class airs, you will receive aspect calendars for January-April so that you can use them for notetaking. And if you’re not able to attend live, no worries! Everyone who registers will receive links to the replay and all support materials within 24 hours after the class airs.

QUESTIONS? The webinar will run about 90 minutes. If you have any questions about registration or payment options, please contact Elsie Kerns at elsie@wellnesswithelsie.com or call 856.988.7426 (Eastern Time Zone).

PAST RELATIONSHIPS
and old relationship themes are very present now. Regrets and resentments are resurfacing to be released and forgiven, so that we may move forward less entangled in the past. People from this lifetime and other lifetimes may appear in dreams, sudden remembrances, or even in physical form. We notice their significance by dream images that do not fade, by memories that linger and call us to explore them further, by the emotions that arise and do not quickly subside.

Venus, the goddess of Love, and Saturn, the lord of Karma, conjoin at 21°44´ Aquarius on Monday this week, while both are at the "bending" of the karmic nodal axis. Venus will be precisely square the nodes on Wednesday, and the Saturn-node square will be exact on April 11.

THIS ANNUAL CONJUNCTION between Venus and Saturn is also typically a time for serious decisions in the areas of love and finances. The Chandra Symbol for the 22nd degree of Aquarius is "A woman making lace." John Sandbach's explanation of this symbol gives us hope for the outcomes of current negotiations:

"Here we find patience as well as the ability to concentrate and to perceive the overall patterns of whatever we are dealing with. This degree is adept at carrying out delicate procedures and of keeping all the strands of its motives and needs straight. It is one who brings people and situations together in an attempt to produce something harmonious and beautiful – a degree of great refinement."

Another hopeful indicator, Neptune is in harmonious aspect to the nodal axis this week, providing the opportunity for us to let go of past animosities or jealousies (South Node in Scorpio) and turn our attention to peacemaking (North Node in Taurus). As the planet of Transcendence, Neptune assists us in forgiving and releasing what has been, so that we can move into compassion and understanding.

OUR NEW LUNAR CYCLE begins at 11:24 p.m. PDT on Thursday, March 31 (6:24 am GMT on Friday, April 1), when the Sun and Moon align at 11°30´ Aries. The two lights are within two degrees of Messenger Mercury, indicating a focus on communication, transportation, and information sharing for at least the next two weeks. The Sun and Moon are also within one degree of the Wounded Healer Chiron at the time of the lunation.

The potential contained in this stellium of Mercury, the Sun, the Moon, and Chiron is that of healing through open, forthright communication and new, pioneering ideas. At the same time, since Mercury in Aries is not known for tactfulness and people are feeling especially insecure and vulnerable, it will be important to carefully consider our words before speaking. With the New Moon also semisquare Venus, addressing differing values and discussing economic issues are key to finding resolution

This New Moon is also significant in that it opens the door to eclipse season; our next New Moon, on April 30, will be a partial solar eclipse. As we enter the new lunar cycle this week, we are also embarking on a time of major developments that will influence our course, both individually and globally, for the next six months. More on the eclipses in the weeks to come.

HERE are the planetary aspects we'll be working with this week, day by day:

Monday
Venus conjunct Saturn: This alignment provides a reality check in the areas of relationship and finances. It is time to consider practical concerns in both of these arenas.
Neptune sextile North Node: An opportunity to forgive what has been, to release past resentments, and to open our hearts in compassion and peace.

Tuesday
No major aspects are exact today.

Wednesday
Venus square nodal axis: Relationships from the past, or old relationship patterns, come to the surface to be acknowledged, forgiven, and resolved.
Mercury semisquare Saturn: Conversations do not flow easily today. The overall mood is a bit pessimistic, so try not to make important decisions based on seeing the glass as half empty instead of half full.
Venus sextile Eris: The courage of our convictions motivates new action in relationship or financial matters.

Thursday
New Moon 11:24 p.m. PDT (6:24 am GMT on Friday): The Aries New Moon is a time for courageous new initiatives, based in a strong knowing of what we truly want and need.

Friday-Saturday
Mercury semisquare Venus, Sun conjunct Chiron, Mercury conjunct Chiron, Sun conjunct Mercury, Venus semisquare Chiron: Conversations, while difficult, provide an opportunity to directly address key issues in a relationship. If care and understanding are invoked, and we use the communication skills of both speaking clearly and listening intentionally, healing is possible.

Sunday
Mercury sextile Ceres, Sun sextile Ceres: It is easier to communicate with empathy and an open mind today. We feel a stronger rapport with others, especially with family and with animals.

IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK: Your rational mind is highlighted this year, perhaps inspiring you to put pen to paper or to speak your truth more directly. It will be important to carefully assess your style of communicating. If you find yourself speaking too impulsively or loudly, consider that this abruptness may be coming from a place in you that is fearful that it won't be heard if it doesn't assert itself forcefully. Take the time to listen to and care for this aspect of your being, and it is more likely that others will likewise take the time to listen carefully to you. (Solar Return Sun conjunct Mercury, semisquare Venus, conjunct Chiron)

In peace and with gratitude,

Pam

WE ARE EMBARKING on one of the steepest sections of this "final ascent" that is the last four months of 2021. This is a highly volcanic period, both literally and symbolically. The next six to eight weeks will be profoundly pivotal and life-changing, for individuals and for the global community.

The primary influence we're working with throughout this time is the disruptive and eruptive Pluto-Eris square. This aspect was exact on August 27 and will perfect for the fifth and final time on October 8. We can imagine the August event as one peak in the mountain range, with next week's square being an even higher summit.

Although the aspect isn't exact to the degree until next week, this is one of those astrological influences that has effect for many months (and sometimes years) since it involves two planets that move very slowly through the zodiac. The first Pluto-Eris square occurred in early 2020, which means its lifeline has basically corresponded with the timeline of the pandemic. In fact, the dates of the exact square have correlated to times when the pandemic was at its greatest effect: January 2020 (when it first came into our awareness), June 2020, December 2020, August 2021, and now October 2021.

Pluto is said to "rule" viruses, which strengthens our belief that the Pluto-Eris square is closely involved in our pandemic experience. But it is in exploring the personal and social effects of this hard aspect that we gain a better understanding of its higher purposes.

TRANSITING PLUTO acts somewhat like a psychotherapist when it works with us. It digs deep into our psyches, revealing emotions and behaviors that have been running us from behind the scenes. The purpose of this often-uncomfortable process is to bring disempowering patterns into our awareness so that they no longer control us.

Meanwhile, transiting Eris draws our attention to the experience of being discounted, rejected, and unfairly treated. This dwarf planet is known for stirring major controversies, based on the mythical goddess Eris' role in starting the Trojan war.

As Pluto and Eris square each other, we are especially likely to feel deep-seated fear and anger due to situations that feel outside of our control. Interpersonal conflict, civil unrest, and other forms of social upheaval manifest as a result of the need to express and release those emotions. All of this occurs en route to fulfilling the positive potentials of this aspect, which include becoming aware of and transmuting our own shadow side, which ultimately can lead to greater personal empowerment and the ability to stand in our truth without needing to control others.

RETROGRADE MERCURY will be exactly opposite Eris and square Pluto this Friday, triggering the effects of the longer-term aspect we’ve just been discussing. This involvement of Messenger Mercury represents a "war of words" as major differences in perspective draw clear battle lines in the sand.

Due to Mercury's retrograde phase, it is activating the Pluto-Eris square three times over the course of six weeks. The first activation was on September 22; the second is this Friday, October 1; and the third will be November 1-2. These three time periods are linked together energetically, which means we should see an unfolding of issues at each point that relate to a larger theme. Concerns that we work with during this time may not be fully resolved until after Mercury leaves its retrograde "shadow phase" on November 3.

Since Mercury is in Libra, the sign of lawsuits and justice, personal and business partnerships, negotiations and contracts, these are topics that are likely to dominate our thoughts and the news headlines during this time. And, with Mercury now moving backward, its aspects this Friday call for a review of policies that were recently implemented and words that were spoken not long ago.

HERE IS A LIST of the other significant aspects that occur this week, along with my brief interpretations of each:

Monday
Mars sesquiquadrate Jupiter: With Mars in litigious Libra and Jupiter in equality-minded Aquarius, the desire for justice is especially strong today and can inspire impulsive action.

Tuesday
Last Quarter Moon 6:57 p.m. PDT: Today we enter the last phase of the lunar cycle, which calls us to reflect on how our plans have unfolded since the Virgo New Moon on September 6. This seven-day period leading up to the Libra New Moon on October 6 is a time to let go of what we do not want to carry going forward, so that we can start the new lunar cycle with a clean slate.

Wednesday
Venus trine Neptune: We feel especially compassionate and idealistic with this influence. This is the best day of the week to have a conversation with a loved one about shared dreams and desires.
Sun trine Saturn: This stabilizing influence can help us to find our footing on otherwise slippery slopes.

Thursday
Jupiter sesquiquadrate the Sun and square Venus: Self-indulgence is strong with these aspects. If self-control is a problem for you, pay close attention to the wisdom of your choices today; otherwise, you may soon have buyer's remorse, or wish you hadn't had that extra piece of cake, or feel uncomfortable about having made a promise that you won't be able to keep.

Friday
Mercury opposite Eris, Mercury square Pluto: These aspects are discussed earlier in today's Journal.
Mars opposite Chiron: People are especially sensitive today if they feel ignored or treated unfairly. As a result, anger is quick to surface and there is a tendency to impulsive action.

Saturday
Venus semisquare Sun, sextile Pluto, quincunx Eris: Relationships go through an adjustment phase, but can also deepen in honesty and understanding.

Sunday
Mars trine Ceres: A strong desire to protect and care for loved ones.
Chiron sesquiquadrate Venus and opposite the Sun: People are especially sensitive today. We may take things very personally, causing angry exchanges or passive-aggressive actions.
Mercury trine Jupiter: With Mercury retrograde, this is our chance to have an inner conversation with ourselves, to discover what we really think and what we want to say before we have a verbal exchange with others.

IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK: You are more aware than usual of your personal needs this year, which may be surprising if you have the usual Libra tendency to downplay your own desires in order to keep the peace or to make a loved one happy. While your nurturing capacity and your wish to support others are very strong, it is vital that you turn that loving attention on yourself and give time to your inner child, the part of you that doesn't feel like it has a right to have its own needs and wants. As you do this inner healing, your relationships with others will go through an adjustment phase, but you will also feel more self-confident and be able to create more balanced partnerships. (Solar Return Sun semisquare Venus, conjunct Mars, trine Ceres, opposite Chiron, trine Saturn)

In peace and with gratitude,

Pam
