Your true nature will not remain concealed. by John Smallman | Jesus Through John
Jesus Audio Blog for Thursday July 27th
As enormous changes continue to occur planet-wide, don’t become blasé about them, welcome them and hold the loving intent for them to continue bringing about the essential alterations in the way you all live and interact with one another across the world. They have been in progress for a number of decades now, as human rights and concern for the planet have become important issues that humanity has chosen to address, especially now as awareness has grown of the need to terminate conflicts and completely and finally resolve the related issues of poverty, starvation, enslavement, and homelessness that have been endemic for a very long time. Your relatively modern technologies made it physically possible to resolve these issues many decades ago, but only now have enough of you become sufficiently aware of how unconscionable it is not to resolve these issues that now you will ensure that the necessary steps are taken to make it happen.
You are all One, as you keep being reminded, and the truth and validity of that statement is finally being recognized. And therefore you are changing your attitude from “the impoverished and homeless should be helped,” to “we can and we will end poverty and homelessness on Planet Earth.” There is no excuse for poverty or for the abuse – psychological, emotional, or physical – that the less able amongst you undergo simply because the “system” demands that people be responsible for themselves. That is separation very clearly demonstrated.
Every human has issues of low self-esteem and unworthiness – it is part of the illusory environment in which you find yourselves as humans – and has chosen to learn the lessons with which those issues present them.
You all present masks or images to everyone else because of the intense sense of insecurity that separation levies or inflicts upon you. There is not one among you who is completely secure in the knowledge of God’s eternal and infinite Love for you. And, as you cannot be unaware, for most there is practically no understanding, no knowing, and no awareness that they are the prefect and beloved children of God.
You, who read channeled messages and spiritual books, or attend workshops and seminars are at the forefront of humanity’s awakening process. You are the Light bearers and Light workers who chose to be incarnate at this time to assist in humanity’s awakening process. The most effective way in which you can do this is by daily setting the intent to be loving in every situation, in every interaction with another, even if another confronts you violently or threateningly. Remember that You are Love, and that there is only One. Every human is an aspect of Oneness, and those who behave violently, threateningly, deceitfully and unlovingly are just feeling their sense of separation far more intensely than most.
Love is the cure, the balm, the comfort, the healing solution for all of humanity’s issues. Your task is to walk through your fear, which in truth is unreal, illusory, and be Love in action, offering only Love regardless of the situations in which you find yourselves. People have been doing this for many years in war zones, natural disaster areas, and in areas of endemic or catastrophic illness, as doctors, nurses, and general care-givers, attending to all who are sick or injured, regardless of whether they are of the military or are civilians, in a truly loving way. And even more are doing so today, offering healing and love to those who are wounded – whether psychologically, emotionally, physically, or in all these ways – and for many of those it is the first time they have experienced any form of true and unconditional loving attention.
You are, as you know, beings of Love, created in Love, and, as humans, you are experiencing the unreality of separation as though it were real! You built the illusion for this purpose and it has most successfully presented you with what you sought – an environment devoid of Love! You wanted to experience separation from Source, from Love, and so you took human form and separated yourselves from your true nature by placing a shield, a veil, a screen, a cloak, a curtain between you and Love. But it is totally insubstantial. Small children often hide from each other and from their parents by going behind curtains, doors, trees, bushes, whatever is available in the moment, knowing that their loved ones remain present for them even if they cannot see them. But sometimes those games become too intense – maybe the parents enter into the spirit of the game and hide from the children – then the children end up frightened and in tears, needing much soothing and comforting.
This is really not so different from humanity’s experience, except that God, Source, never joins in the game and hides! God is always with you because there is no separation, ever! Such a state is impossible. The illusion is a dream or nightmare from which you will inevitably awaken into the joy that is the eternal and ever-present Presence of God.
Even as humans you know that dreams and nightmares do not last, that they are ephemeral. However, some of those who have undergone great suffering and trauma experience recurring nightmares from which they awaken in a cold sweat, often shaking with terror. When you awaken from the illusion there will be no cold sweats, no shaking with terror, because you will truly awaken into Reality, Love, Oneness, where there is only eternal peace and joy, delight and contentment beyond your wildest dreams.
It can be very helpful to listen to those who have had NDEs talk about their Near Death Experiences, or read the books they have written about those experiences. Prior to their NDEs they were frequently practically or even completely unaware that there was anywhere else, apart from the illusion – the physical environment that humanity inhabits – which they believed was real, where life could be found. The NDE was a mind-blowing experience for them that permanently changed them and their beliefs about life. Afterwards they KNEW that life, their life, was forever, immortal, eternal, and with that knowing all their doubts and worries dissolved, as did, of course, any fear of death that they might previously have entertained.
All humans are immortal beings having an unreal experience of separation that seems completely real while they are undergoing it. Many, who have a religious faith of any kind, also believe that there is a hell to which they could be sent for all eternity when they die and lay down their human bodies, if they do not live good lives. I assure you that this is not so.
There is only God, Source, in Whom all life exists eternally in peace and joy. However, those who choose fear and act out of fear effectively hide Reality, Love, God, from themselves behind that veil or cloak of fear that they draw about themselves. You have free will because Love is free, It never imposes, orders, or commands, It offers Itself completely to all without any exceptions, and It never withdraws. It is always there for you awaiting your acceptance of It, and when you do accept it, as you inevitably will, It welcomes you Home with arms opened wide to embrace you most joyfully.
Truly, your destiny is set, it is eternal Love lived unendingly in the Presence of Mother/Father/God. Your true nature, as you have so often been told, is Love, which is LIFE forever in the Presence of God, and in that state there is only JOY! Love does not see suffering or pain because they are unreal, of the illusion, and can only be very temporarily experienced in that unreal state. In your eternal Home, which you have temporarily forgotten or lost sight of, there is endless infinite Joy.
Prepare to awaken by constantly intending to demonstrate Love in action by being Love in action. Your true nature will not remain concealed, concealment is of the illusion, it cannot remain concealed because only what is real exists, and Love is All That Exists. Permanent joy patiently awaits your awakening, so engage only with love and dispel the nightmare with all its trauma, pain, and suffering. Enough already!
Your loving brother, Jesus.

John Smallman: You were created for eternal life in utter joy. | Jesus Through John
Jesus Audio Blog for Sunday July 2nd.
Change is in the air! Yes, all the channeled messages are telling you this, because you do need to focus on your awareness of this. Don’t just dismiss these seemingly repetitive messages with a shrug and the thought “here we go again,” as your egoic memory kicks in to tell you that you have heard all this before and that really “it’s just the same old, same old.”
I assure you it is not! Enormous changes are ongoing that will vastly alter the way you live and interact with one another all across the world, regardless of race, nationality, ethnicity, religious persuasion, or political beliefs. This time of great change has been a long time coming, but it is now firmly established on Earth, and despite the unsettling and disturbing news of conflicts and all the consequential problems that follow on from them, a sea change has occurred and the old and damaging ways of interaction are being rapidly discarded.
You all want to live in peace and abundance on your beautiful planet, and you all want to see her restored to vibrant good health with all the ugly and damaging industrial scars repaired, healed, and brought back to an ecologically sound state. This is going to happen, but first the ongoing despoliation due to mining, drilling, industrial scale farming, and insensitive and unwise waste disposal has to cease. There are many groups working on this and it will happen. Your task as Light bearers and Light workers is to hold the intent for Love to flow abundantly into these groups, thus enabling them to work harmoniously together to achieve their loving aims for the planet and for humanity, using discernment – never judgment – to resolve issues where there appears to be disagreement.
Disagreements dissolve when full discussion of all the possibilities occurs in an attitude of willingness to look at them all without egoic preconceptions driven by an individual’s need to be right or to be the leader. Every member of a group is an essential part of it, even if only to demonstrate the need for harmonious acceptance of the differing views that naturally arise due to the experience of separation that all are undergoing. You are all One, but, as you operate from separated individual bodies, it is very difficult for you to accept that and work as One.
Team sports encourage this, but even they have become overly competitive over the last five or six decades as sport has become a business. Sporting activities just for the fun of them are extremely good for your spiritual growth and development, but when they become unduly competitive, driven by egoic needs to be seen and highly praised as a special individual – better than everyone else – they are very destructive and divisive.
Undoubtedly there are gifted individuals – humans of exceptional abilities – but they still absolutely need the support of their team mates if they are to achieve their aims. Highly gifted individual humans are just at the forefront of the evolutionary wave that humanity is undergoing, and their real purpose is to demonstrate what is becoming possible for more and more of you, not to undermine and destroy the self-confidence of the “average” human in his or her own abilities and competences. When their self-confidence is badly damaged or destroyed individuals find themselves unable and/or unwilling to even attempt to fulfill their human potential, thus failing to understand and learn the lessons with which a human life presents them, and this is quite tragic for them, and utterly unnecessary.
Everyone has a meaningful life purpose, there are No exceptions! However, most cultures engage in judging and shaming those who appear to be abnormal in any way. Love never does that! You all are LOVE. Be yourselves, be loving, do not fear to be who you are in case others will judge you as weak or stupid. Being yourselves, being Love, is how the world is returned to its rightful state with you as its guardians, honoring its needs as it honors yours. You have a saying from literature “No man is an island.” Finally humanity is realizing the absolute truth of this very wise comment. Even if you chose to go and live alone and in seclusion as a hermit you would still be utterly dependent on the Earth’s bounty for your individual survival.
If you can truly consider what it means to be One, One with each other, and, of course, One with God, you will come to understand that there is no other way! You are One, One Mind, One Heart, all eternally interconnected through the Source that is All. There is nothing outside, so to exclude anyone is utterly insane. You need to learn to accept the differences that are many-fold between individuals, and you need be open to hearing and learning the lessons that these differences offer you. They don’t just come into your lives by chance, by coincidence; everything in your life is an essential aspect of the path you chose to follow before you incarnated. Be aware. When you are then judgment falls away because you see how meaningless it is to attempt to judge another.
By what standards do you judge? Obviously by those of your own very limited opinions and beliefs. As your awareness opens up more and more you begin to realize how extremely limited are your views and opinions. Often awareness is refused because it can be very frightening to understand how limited and narrow is your perception of the meaning of life. It can feel much safer to follow narrow and rigid rules – set by yourself or by authority figures or organizations that you honor out of fear – because then you do not need to use your own intelligence, wisdom, or discernment, but can rely on others who are mostly just as fearful as you are. You just refuse to acknowledge that fear, and hide it under the judgments you make, or by behaving violently to “prove” to yourself and others how strong and powerful you are. But of course, eventually, this deceit catches up with you, intensifying the fear that you were attempting to hide through these attitude and behaviors.
Love is the only means available to disarm and dissolve your fears, and you need nothing else! Love, as you have so often been told, is All That Exists. It surrounds you awaiting your acceptance of It. When you open your hearts and welcome It in your lives will change dramatically for the better. But you can’t pretend by putting on a loving mask or front and hiding behind it, you have to be who you truly are, a beloved child of God living as you truly desire, loving what arises and giving thanks for the fact that you are eternally One with Source, and therefore that all your needs are always met in the moment in which they arise. If it does not seem to you that they are, then you are misreading the situation and then possibly responding or reacting inappropriately.
Just remind yourselves daily, when you go within to your holy inner sanctuary, that you are a perfect child of God, infinitely loved and cherished for all eternity. You are having a human experience, an experience you chose to have when you chose separation from God, in order to prove to yourself that you had no need of Him. But, as you have been told so often, separation from Source is impossible! You have enormous creative abilities and you used them to construct the illusion in which to have your dream, or more appropriately your nightmare of separation. You did not understand how terrifying it would be when you built it, but when you entered the illusion, thus losing all your memory and knowledge of God your eternal Source, you instantly felt lost, abandoned, alone – an impossible, unreal, dream state – terror arose because it appeared totally real to you.
You are always and eternally connected to and One with Source. Even to momentarily imagine being removed from that state is terrifying because it indicates that there is a state of existence that is not eternal, that is limited by time and has an end. You were created for eternal life in utter joy, and to imagine that you could move out of that state, as you did, is terrifying. Life is eternal, BUT within the illusion it appears to be but a short moment of existence in a vast universe that is completely unaware of you!
You all know people who are always seeking acceptance, acknowledgement, praise, and love. In truth that is how all humans live their time limited lives, and so the fear of death is always hovering in the background. Some even flirt with it by engaging in extreme sports or other dangerous activities. They are, like everyone else, just seeking confirmation that there is No Death!
Well I joyfully assure you that there is no death! You are eternal and immortal beings, infinitely loved by God, and when you lay down your human bodies, as you all will, you will immediately know this. And of course, in this modern age of mass instant communication – Reality is infinitely faster! – you can now hear from those who have had Near Death Experiences and who have returned to tell you about it and assist you in letting go of your fear of death by reminding you that it is not terminal.
You are all the eternally beloved children of God, eternally and inseparably at One with Him. There is nothing to fear, so engage with Love, your true nature, in every moment, and delight in the joy and energy that arises within you.
Your loving brother, Jesus. And remember that I have been there, and I know what I’m talking about!

Jesus Audio Blog for Friday November 7th
The event for which you are all waiting – humanity’s move into full consciousness, its awakening, its ascension – draws ever closer. I know you are becoming tired of hearing this kind of message, you want results, not rhetoric. Well, time is of the illusion, and although you experience it moving sequentially and at a relatively constant rate, this is not the reality of it. There are very few of you who have not been aware of time speeding up when you are enjoying yourselves, and of it slowing down when you are in pain. Time, like the illusion of which it is a major aspect, is purely subjective! That is probably difficult for you to accept or understand, and yet everything that you are aware of, that you experience is most definitely subjective.
Ice cream, a dream, an illness, are all deeply subjective experiences – the joy you get from eating ice cream is not provided by watching someone else eat it! But your scientists have for many years been discarding subjective evidence, claiming that it is inadmissible as proof of an event, and demanding objective proof in order for them to validate it. But objective proof is still subject to their subjective opinions – needless to say their “expert” opinions – as to whether or not it is valid. And over the years many proofs that those scientists have validated have later turned out to be invalid.
You, each one of you, and God are One. Scientific proof of this truth is not available and never will be, only subjective proof is available. Only a few of you have had this most wonderful and ecstatic experience, and it did not last. In human form, embodied, you could not undergo this state of extremely heightened and intense energy for more than a few moments or your bodies would just dissolve, disintegrate, or burn up. However, once experienced, this experience is never forgotten, because it is utterly beyond any state that you could ever imagine, utterly REAL, and completely unforgettable.
Those who have had such an experience often attempt to describe it in words, but quickly admit that to do so is impossible. But the changes that occur within them as a result – their attitudes, their behaviors, their increased wisdom, and their uncomplaining acceptance of life in whatever form it unfolds for them – is immediately apparent to all who know them. And for many that is more than sufficient proof of the existence of an infinitely loving God in which all that exists is contained. Within the illusion the only proof of the Reality of God, of His eternal existence, is personal subjective experience, or acceptance of the validity of another’s personal subjective experience.
Once you accept that proof into your hearts you discover or realize that no other proof is necessary, and a great weight is lifted from you as you relax into the knowing that God is All, and that you are an eternally inseparable part of Him. Your Oneness with Source is a deep inner certainty, a knowing that nothing and no one can invalidate. If you want further confirmation from your 3D environment then read some of the reports from those who have had NDEs (near death experiences), and be inspired and uplifted. None who have had NDEs have any fear of death, nor do they have any desire for an early termination of their human existence. They know they are on their path, and they surrender totally to God as they go about their daily human lives, doing His Will by being, sharing, and extending the Love that He offers to all.
So, to repeat, the event draws ever closer! All that you need do is to accept that divine guarantee, and then go lovingly about your daily busyness or chores. The important word there is “lovingly.” To lovingly go about your daily lives is all that God asks of you. He does not ask or demand that you change the world, because to attempt to do that is to engage with the illusion and attempt to solve insoluble problems with your human intellect, and that cannot be done.
However, if you go lovingly about your day, every day, you will perceive that the world around you is changing. If you go forth lovingly you will experience love, and if you go forth fearfully you will experience fear. Up until very recently people whose intent was to be loving used to find their intent oscillating regularly between love and fear as they listened to their friends and relatives and occasionally heard some good news, or listened to the news media and heard of disasters and catastrophes.
Now, enveloped in the Tsunami of Love as you are, you have unprecedented assistance to maintain a loving intent in every moment. All in the spiritual realms are now over-lighting you 24/7 because the moment for your awakening is exceedingly close. The Ocean of Love that is following closely behind the Tsunami that leads It is vast, unstoppable, and very close! Love is momentous, it absolutely overwhelms all in Its path, and all that exists is always in Its path.
Within the illusion that you built and entered by means of your powerful imaginations, you chose to exclude God, the Source of your eternal existence, thereby excluding Love. But Love is always knocking on the door, the door of your heart, because It wants to fill you with the joy and ecstasy that only It can provide. And when you open to It, as soon you will, you will find yourselves instantly AWAKE.
You cannot avoid Reality, your heavenly Home, because you are always within It. The pretense that you have been maintaining – that you live in world that is a real and threateningly dangerous place – is dissolving under the enormous amount of evidence proving it to be unreal. You are in the process of returning to your natural state of eternal joy because that is your will and God’s.
Your loving brother, Jesus.

New science is shedding light on what really happens during out-of-body experiences -- with shocking results. ~ by Mario Beauregard | SALON: Near death, explained
Wow! I can't say I am surprised. I recall when
I was a pre-teen, my Mom telling me she hovered above the room while
giving birth to me...and I often pondered my fate if she had not
returned to her body in time...though when mentioning this as an adult,
she had no recall of this..or more likely, blocked it out due to fear.
Anyway, a fascinating story here. -PB

This article was adapted from the new book "Brain Wars", from Harper One.
In 1991, Atlanta-based singer and songwriter Pam Reynolds felt extremely dizzy, lost her ability to speak, and had difficulty moving her body. A CAT scan showed that she had a giant artery aneurysm—a grossly swollen blood vessel in the wall of her basilar artery, close to the brain stem. If it burst, which could happen at any moment, it would kill her. But the standard surgery to drain and repair it might kill her too.
With no other options, Pam turned to a last, desperate measure offered by neurosurgeon Robert Spetzler at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Spetzler was a specialist and pioneer in hypothermic cardiac arrest—a daring surgical procedure nicknamed “Operation Standstill.” Spetzler would bring Pam’s body down to a temperature so low that she was essentially dead. Her brain would not function, but it would be able to survive longer without oxygen at this temperature. The low temperature would also soften the swollen blood vessels, allowing them to be operated on with less risk of bursting. When the procedure was complete, the surgical team would bring her back to a normal temperature before irreversible damage set in.
Essentially, Pam agreed to die in order to save her life—and in the process had what is perhaps the most famous case of independent corroboration of out of body experience (OBE) perceptions on record. This case is especially important because cardiologist Michael Sabom was able to obtain verification from medical personnel regarding crucial details of the surgical intervention that Pam reported. Here’s what happened.
Pam was brought into the operating room at 7:15 a.m., she was given general anesthesia, and she quickly lost conscious awareness. At this point, Spetzler and his team of more than 20 physicians, nurses, and technicians went to work. They lubricated Pam’s eyes to prevent drying, and taped them shut. They attached EEG electrodes to monitor the electrical activity of her cerebral cortex. They inserted small, molded speakers into her ears and secured them with gauze and tape. The speakers would emit repeated 100-decibel clicks—approximately the noise produced by a speeding express train—eliminating outside sounds and measuring the activity of her brainstem.
At 8:40 a.m., the tray of surgical instruments was uncovered, and Robert Spetzler began cutting through Pam’s skull with a special surgical saw that produced a noise similar to a dental drill. At this moment, Pam later said, she felt herself “pop” out of her body and hover above it, watching as doctors worked on her body.

Although she no longer had use of her eyes and ears, she described her observations in terms of her senses and perceptions. “I thought the way they had my head shaved was very peculiar,” she said. “I expected them to take all of the hair, but they did not.” She also described the Midas Rex bone saw (“The saw thing that I hated the sound of looked like an electric toothbrush and it had a dent in it … ”) and the dental-drill sound it made with considerable accuracy.
Meanwhile, Spetzler was removing the outermost membrane of Pamela’s brain, cutting it open with scissors. At about the same time, a female cardiac surgeon was attempting to locate the femoral artery in Pam’s right groin. Remarkably, Pam later claimed to remember a female voice saying, “We have a problem. Her arteries are too small.” And then a male voice: “Try the other side.” Medical records confirm this conversation, yet Pam could not have heard them.
The cardiac surgeon was right—Pam’s blood vessels were indeed too small to accept the abundant blood flow requested by the cardiopulmonary bypass machine, so at 10:50 a.m., a tube was inserted into Pam’s left femoral artery and connected to the cardiopulmonary bypass machine. The warm blood circulated from the artery into the cylinders of the bypass machine, where it was cooled down before being returned to her body. Her body temperature began to fall, and at 11:05 a.m. Pam’s heart stopped. Her EEG brain waves flattened into total silence. A few minutes later, her brain stem became totally unresponsive, and her body temperature fell to a sepulchral 60 degrees Fahrenheit. At 11:25 a.m., the team tilted up the head of the operating table, turned off the bypass machine, and drained the blood from her body. Pamela Reynolds was clinically dead.
At this point, Pam’s out-of-body adventure transformed into a near-death experience (NDE): She recalls floating out of the operating room and traveling down a tunnel with a light. She saw deceased relatives and friends, including her long-dead grandmother, waiting at the end of this tunnel. She entered the presence of a brilliant, wonderfully warm and loving light, and sensed that her soul was part of God and that everything in existence was created from the light (the breathing of God). But this extraordinary experience ended abruptly, as Reynolds’s deceased uncle led her back to her body—a feeling she described as “plunging into a pool of ice.”
Meanwhile, in the operating room, the surgery had come to an end. When all the blood had drained from Pam’s brain, the aneurysm simply collapsed and Spetzler clipped it off. Soon, the bypass machine was turned on and warm blood was pumped back into her body. As her body temperature started to increase, her brainsteam began to respond to the clicking speakers in her ears and the EEG recorded electrical activity in the cortex. The bypass machine was turned off at 12:32 p.m. Pam’s life had been restored, and she was taken to the recovery room in stable condition at 2:10 p.m.
Tales of otherworldly experiences have been part of human cultures seemingly forever, but NDEs as such first came to broad public attention in 1975 by way of American psychiatrist and philosopher Raymond Moody’s popular book Life After Life. He presented more than 100 case studies of people who experienced vivid mental experiences close to death or during “clinical death” and were subsequently revived to tell the tale. Their experiences were remarkably similar, and Moody coined the term NDE to refer to this phenomenon. The book was popular and controversial, and scientific investigation of NDEs began soon after its publication with the founding, in 1978, of the International Association for Near Death Studies (IANDS)—the first organization in the world devoted to the scientific study of NDEs and their relationship to mind and consciousness.
NDEs are the vivid, realistic, and often deeply life-changing experiences of men, women, and children who have been physiologically or psychologically close to death. They can be evoked by cardiac arrest and coma caused by brain damage, intoxication, or asphyxia. They can also happen following such events as electrocution, complications from surgery, or severe blood loss during or after a delivery. They can even occur as the result of accidents or illnesses in which individuals genuinely fear they might die. Surveys conducted in the United States and Germany suggest that approximately 4.2 percent of the population has reported an NDE. It has also been estimated that more than 25 million individuals worldwide have had an NDE in the past 50 years.
People from all walks of life and belief systems have this experience. Studies indicate that the experience of an NDE is not influenced by gender, race, socioeconomic status, or level of education. Although NDEs are sometimes presented as religious experiences, this seems to be a matter of individual perception. Furthermore, researchers have found no relationship between religion and the experience of an NDE. That is, it did not matter whether the people recruited in those studies were Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, Buddhist, atheist, or agnostic.
Although the details differ, NDEs are characterized by a number of core features. Perhaps the most vivid is the OBE: the sense of having left one’s body and of watching events going on around one’s body or, occasionally, at some distant physical location. During OBEs, near-death experiencers (NDErs) are often astonished to discover that they have retained consciousness, perception, lucid thinking, memory, emotions, and their sense of personal identity. If anything, these processes are heightened: Thinking is vivid; hearing is sharp; and vision can extend to 360 degrees. NDErs claim that without physical bodies, they are able to penetrate through walls and doors and project themselves wherever they want. They frequently report the ability to read people’s thoughts.
The effects of NDEs on the experience are intense, overwhelming, and real. A number of studies conducted in United States, Western European countries, and Australia have shown that most NDErs are profoundly and positively transformed by the experience. One woman says, “I was completely altered after the accident. I was another person, according to those who lived near me. I was happy, laughing, appreciated little things, joked, smiled a lot, became friends with everyone … so completely different than I was before!”
However different their personalities before the NDE, experiencers tend to share a similar psychological profile after the NDE. Indeed, their beliefs, values, behaviors, and worldviews seem quite comparable afterward. Importantly, these psychological and behavioral changes are not the kind of changes one would expect if this experience were a hallucination. And, as noted NDE researcher Pim van Lommel and his colleagues have demonstrated, these changes become more apparent with the passage of time.
Some skeptics legitimately argue that the main problem with reports of OBE perceptions is that they often rest uniquely on the NDEr’s testimony—there is no independent corroboration. From a scientific perspective, such self-reports remain inconclusive. But during the last few decades, some self-reports of NDErs have been independently corroborated by witnesses, such as that of Pam Reynolds. One of the best known of these corroborated veridical NDE perceptions—perceptions that can be proven to coincide with reality—is the experience of a woman named Maria, whose case was first documented by her critical care social worker, Kimberly Clark.
Maria was a migrant worker who had a severe heart attack while visiting friends in Seattle. She was rushed to Harborview Hospital and placed in the coronary care unit. A few days later, she had a cardiac arrest but was rapidly resuscitated. The following day, Clark visited her. Maria told Clark that during her cardiac arrest she was able to look down from the ceiling and watch the medical team at work on her body. At one point in this experience, said Maria, she found herself outside the hospital and spotted a tennis shoe on the ledge of the north side of the third floor of the building. She was able to provide several details regarding its appearance, including the observations that one of its laces was stuck underneath the heel and that the little toe area was worn. Maria wanted to know for sure whether she had “really” seen that shoe, and she begged Clark to try to locate it.
Quite skeptical, Clark went to the location described by Maria—and found the tennis shoe. From the window of her hospital room, the details that Maria had recounted could not be discerned. But upon retrieval of the shoe, Clark confirmed Maria’s observations. “The only way she could have had such a perspective,” said Clark, “was if she had been floating right outside and at very close range to the tennis shoe. I retrieved the shoe and brought it back to Maria; it was very concrete evidence for me.”
This case is particularly impressive given that during cardiac arrest, the flow of blood to the brain is interrupted. When this happens, the brain’s electrical activity (as measured with EEG) disappears after 10 to 20 seconds. In this state, a patient is deeply comatose. Because the brain structures mediating higher mental functions are severely impaired, such patients are expected to have no clear and lucid mental experiences that will be remembered. Nonetheless, studies conducted in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and United States have revealed that approximately 15 percent of cardiac arrest survivors do report some recollection from the time when they were clinically dead. These studies indicate that consciousness, perceptions, thoughts, and feelings can be experienced during a period when the brain shows no measurable activity.
NDEs experienced by people who do not have sight in everyday life are quite intriguing. In 1994, researchers Kenneth Ring and Sharon Cooper decided to undertake a search for cases of NDE-based perception in the blind. They reasoned that such cases would represent the ultimate demonstration of veridical perceptions during NDEs. If a blind person was able to report on verifiable events that took place when they were clinically dead, that would mean something real was occurring. They interviewed 31 individuals, of whom 14 were blind from birth. Twenty-one of the participants had had an NDE; the others had had OBEs only. Strikingly, the experiences they reported conform to the classic NDE pattern, whether they were born blind or had lost their sight in later life. The results of the study were published in 1997. Based on all the cases they investigated, Ring and Cooper concluded that what happens during an NDE affords another perspective to perceive reality that does not depend on the senses of the physical body. They proposed to call this other mode of perception mindsight.
Despite corroborated reports, many materialist scientists cling to the notion that OBEs and NDEs are located in the brain. In 2002, neurologist Olaf Blanke and colleagues at the University Hospitals of Geneva and Lausanne in Switzerland described in the prestigious scientific journal Nature the strange occurrence that happened to a 43-year-old female patient with epilepsy. Because her seizures could not be controlled by medication alone, neurosurgery was being considered as the next step. The researchers implanted electrodes in her right temporal lobe to provide information about the localization and extent of the epileptogenic zone—the area of the brain that was causing the seizures—which had to be surgically removed. Other electrodes were implanted to identify and localize, by means of electrical stimulation, the areas of the brain that—if removed—would result in loss of sensory capacities, linguistic ability, or even paralysis. Such a procedure is particularly critical to spare important brain areas that are adjacent to the epileptogenic zone.
When they stimulated the angular gyrus—a region of the brain in the parietal lobe that is thought to integrate sensory information related to vision, touch, and balance to give us a perception of our own bodies—the patient reported seeing herself “lying in bed, from above, but I only see my legs and lower trunk.” She described herself as “floating” near the ceiling. She also reported seeing her legs “becoming shorter.”
The article received global press coverage and created quite a commotion. The editors of Nature went so far as to declare triumphantly that as a result of this one study—which involved only one patient—the part of the brain that can induce OBEs had been located.
“It’s another blow against those who believe that the mind and spirit are somehow separate from the brain,” said psychologist Michael Shermer, director of the Skeptics Society, which seeks to debunk all kinds of paranormal claims. “In reality, all experience is derived from the brain.”
In another article published in 2004, Blanke and co-workers described six patients, of whom three had experienced an atypical and incomplete OBE. Four patients reported an autoscopy—that is, they saw their own double from the vantage point of their own body. In this paper, the researchers describe an OBE as a temporary dysfunction of the junction of the temporal and parietal cortex. But, as Pim van Lommel noted, the abnormal bodily experiences described by Blanke and colleagues entail a false sense of reality. Typical OBEs, in contrast, implicate a verifiable perception (from a position above or outside of the body) of events, such as their own resuscitation or a traffic accident, and the surroundings in which the events took place. Along the same lines, psychiatrist Bruce Greyson of the University of Virginia commented that “We cannot assume from the fact that electrical stimulation of the brain can induce OBE-like illusions that all OBEs are therefore illusions.”
Materialistic scientists have proposed a number of physiological explanations to account for the various features of NDEs. British psychologist Susan Blackmore has propounded the “dying brain” hypothesis: that a lack of oxygen (or anoxia) during the dying process might induce abnormal firing of neurons in brain areas responsible for vision, and that such an abnormal firing would lead to the illusion of seeing a bright light at the end of a dark tunnel.
Would it? Van Lommel and colleagues objected that if anoxia plays a central role in the production of NDEs, most cardiac arrest patients would report an NDE. Studies show that this is clearly not the case. Another problem with this view is that reports of a tunnel are absent from several accounts of NDErs. As pointed out by renowned NDE researcher Sam Parnia, some individuals have reported an NDE when they had not been terminally ill and so would have had normal levels of oxygen in their brains.
Parnia raises another problem: When oxygen levels decrease markedly, patients whose lungs or hearts do not work properly experience an “acute confusional state,” during which they are highly confused and agitated and have little or no memory recall. In stark contrast, during NDEs people experience lucid consciousness, well-structured thought processes, and clear reasoning. They also have an excellent memory of the NDE, which usually stays with them for several decades. In other respects, Parnia argues that if this hypothesis is correct, then the illusion of seeing a light and tunnel would progressively develop as the patient’s blood oxygen level drops. Medical observations, however, indicate that patients with low oxygen levels do not report seeing a light, a tunnel, or any of the common features of an NDE we discussed earlier.
During the 1990s, more research indicated that the anoxia theory of NDEs was on the wrong track. James Whinnery, a chemistry professor with West Texas A&M, was involved with studies simulating the extreme conditions that can occur during aerial combat maneuvers. In these studies, fighter pilots were subjected to extreme gravitational forces in a giant centrifuge. Such rapid acceleration decreases blood flow and, consequently, delivery of oxygen to the brain. In so doing, it induces brief periods of unconsciousness that Whinnery calls “dreamlets.” Whinnery hypothesized that although some of the core features of NDEs are found during dreamlets, the main characteristics of dreamlets are impaired memory for events just prior to the onset of unconsciousness, confusion, and disorientation upon awakening. These symptoms are not typically associated with NDEs. In addition, life transformations are never reported following dreamlets.
So, if the “dying brain” is not responsible for NDEs, could they simply be hallucinations? In my opinion, the answer is no. Let’s look at the example of hallucinations that can result from ingesting ketamine, a veterinary drug that is sometimes used recreationally, and often at great cost to the user.
At small doses, the anesthetic agent ketamine can induce hallucinations and feelings of being out of the body. Ketamine is thought to act primarily by inhibiting N-Methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptors, which normally open in response to binding of glutamate, the most abundant excitatory chemical messenger in the human brain. Psychiatrist Karl Jensen has speculated that the blockade of NMDA receptors may induce an NDE. But ketamine experiences are often frightening, producing weird images; and most ketamine users realize that the experiences produced by this drug are illusory. In contrast, NDErs are strongly convinced of the reality of what they experienced. Furthermore, many of the central features of NDEs are not reported with ketamine. That being said, we cannot rule out that the blockade of NMDA receptors may be involved in some NDEs.
Neuroscientist Michael Persinger has claimed that he and his colleagues have produced all the major features of the NDE by using weak transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the temporal lobes. Persinger’s work is based on the premise that abnormal activity in the temporal lobe may trigger an NDE. A review of the literature on epilepsy, however, indicates that the classical features of NDEs are not associated with epileptic seizures located in the temporal lobes. Moreover, as Bruce Greyson and his collaborators have correctly emphasized, the experiences reported by participants in Persinger’s TMS studies bear little resemblance with the typical features of NDEs.
The scientific NDE studies performed over the past decades indicate that heightened mental functions can be experienced independently of the body at a time when brain activity is greatly impaired or seemingly absent (such as during cardiac arrest). Some of these studies demonstrate that blind people can have veridical perceptions during OBEs associated with an NDE. Other investigations show that NDEs often result in deep psychological and spiritual changes.
These findings strongly challenge the mainstream neuroscientific view that mind and consciousness result solely from brain activity. As we have seen, such a view fails to account for how NDErs can experience—while their hearts are stopped—vivid and complex thoughts and acquire veridical information about objects or events remote from their bodies.
NDE studies also suggest that after physical death, mind and consciousness may continue in a transcendent level of reality that normally is not accessible to our senses and awareness. Needless to say, this view is utterly incompatible with the belief of many materialists that the material world is the only reality.
