How to Detox Through Diet by Emily Gelsomin, MLA, RD, LDN | | Mass General

.The detoxification process in our bodies happens naturally. Each day, our system works hard to transform toxins into compounds that the body can dispose of.
.

There is little evidence to support taking “cleansing” supplements or severely restricting your intake to “detox.” Such practices can even be harmful. However, there are certain things you can do to help your body do its job of naturally cleansing your system more efficiently.
.

Good sources of fiber include beans, whole wheat and other whole grains (like oats), vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds.
.
.

Detox with Diet

.

“Smelly” foods: The sulfur in foods like garlic, onions and cruciferous vegetables helps produce a natural chemical detoxifier that is involved in regulating your body’s cleansing process.
.

Though cruciferous vegetables — like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, turnips and kohlrabi — may smell when cooked, they contain powerful compounds called glucosinolates. Glucosinolates help the liver eliminate toxins from your body. Other sources of glucosinolates include radishes, watercress, mustard greens, kale and horseradish.

Water: Being well hydrated aids urine and stool removal, which also helps your system eliminate harmful compounds. While very small amounts of toxins may be removed though sweat, sweating out such compounds is more likely to be dehydrating than therapeutic.  So be sure to replenish fluid lost during exercise or in steamy conditions to keep detoxifying organs, like your kidneys, working efficiently.

Fiber-rich foods: Fiber binds to toxins and carries them out of the body through your stool. Having regular bowel movements lessens the time that harmful compounds hang out in your intestinal tract.
.

Good sources of fiber include beans, whole wheat and other whole grains (like oats), vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. These foods can also act as fuel for the healthy bacteria in your gut and may limit the growth of disease-triggering microbes.
.

Broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower take very kindly to roasting. Simply toss them with olive oil, salt, and pepper and bake them at 425 degrees until they caramelize.
.

Pro- and Prebiotics: Probiotics are beneficial bacteria found in fermented foods. They may reduce the presence of harmful bacteria that can generate toxic byproducts in your intestines.
.

You can increase your intake of probiotics naturally by consuming yogurt, kefir, cultured cottage cheese, miso, kimchi (Korean fermented vegetables), or lacto-fermented sauerkraut (look for it in the refrigerated section of the grocery store – the canned version usually doesn’t have these supportive microbes). Having these foods once in a while won’t cut it. To reap potential benefits you’ll need to eat them regularly. Or better yet, aim for foods that naturally feed the protective bacteria in your gut, as mentioned above. This includes items like asparagus, onions, shallots, barley, and bananas. (Try this asparagus chickpea salad.)

Cooking Tips

Cruciferous vegetables: 
Think vegetables require a lot of prep? Think again. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower take very kindly to roasting. Simply toss them with olive oil, salt, and pepper and bake them at 425 degrees until they caramelize (usually this takes about 20 minutes). Cabbage and kale can be cooked down, so add them to soups and stews. You can also substitute kale in many recipes that call for spinach.

Onions: Think beyond the onion ring. Roasted onions — prepared like you would the vegetables above — can be served as a savory side dish. You can also sautรฉ onions and use them as a base for pizza or as a sandwich topping.

“Hot” plants: Radishes, watercress and horseradish add heat to foods without the spice burn. Slice radishes or toss some watercress into a salad for a little “bite.” Horseradish can be added to yogurt-based sauces or creamy dressings. Use the jarred, prepared variety or look for the horseradish root itself. To use the root, simply peel it like you would a carrot and grate it with a microplane or cheese grater.

Miso: Miso, or fermented soybean paste, is often found in red and white varieties. (White miso is milder.) It can be mixed with an acid (like lime juice or vinegar) and a fat (like sesame oil or olive oil) to make a dressing for cold noodles or salad greens. (Here’s a recipe for sesame miso cucumber salad.)

Miso not your thing? Make a dressing using yogurt as the base instead. Here’s a horseradish yogurt cream recipe. (It works on more than just shellfish — try it with fish or chicken too).

I also had a clear message of someone organizing, excited for a big change and kind of getting ready for the change it would cause anyone involved in this persons reality. I saw someone sitting down with a financial advisor or investor. I felt the emotion of a knowing that someone already experienced. I know exactly what I was being shown because I experienced the same exact thing yrs ago right before manifesting a beautiful shift in my reality.. so someone caught the feeling of it, it became a fact in their consciousness & so it is. Now it becomes reality. This seemed to an overall life change for the better, not just one thing specifically. You will know if you experienced this...may have happened while you were sitting down or driving a car, when you had this deep "knowing". If this doesn't sound very familiar, it may not be for you. And I do believe this is more then one person, because there are a few (or more) that have been so dedicated towards healing & shifting attention/emotions/thoughts towards upliftment... not getting caught up in any of the 3D dramas of the physical. Staying focused. And it wasn't easy to get to this space either so there is immense gratitude and appreciation. These are the ones who have gone through massive changes/adjustments in the recent past & childhood.

Pisces, aligning with Spirit

Pisces is the last of the signs, the place where all of our lives, successes and failures, loves and hates, past and future, light and dark, are integrated. It is where our soul and our personality finally meet—and join.


In Aquarius we incorporated our guiding star, our ideals, into our lives. Now in Pisces we can touch that inner spirit in ourselves which informs us how we are living up to those ideals. We can use that starlight to move through the dark of unfinished business, and its fire to burn away the final dross of our zodiacal journey. It was a Piscean child who could say, “See, the Emperor has no clothes!”


Pisces is a water sign. All water signs are healing and bridging signs. Through them we touch our e-motions, which literally spur us to motion, move us into expression of what has real meaning to us. Pisces’ connection to proper understanding is shown by its association to the feet, which stand under us.


Water signs are in touch with suffering, and most suffering arises in the letting go of something to which we cling. In the air signs, which precede the water signs, we tend to hang onto outmoded ideas, attitudes, perspectives, and ways of thinking. Now, in Pisces, we allow intuition to work with mind to separate the significant from the petty, so that we can let go of non-essentials.


In Pisces, the last of the water signs, we must go all the way, we must finish the job. It is time to go through that metamorphosis which leads to transcendence of all those earthly ties which bind only the personality. The way must be opened for the soul.


The energy for this inner ruthlessness is like the great depths of the sea. During its quiet times the sea erodes the land inconspicuously but inexorably. In its stormy times, tidal waves and hurricanes can be totally devastating. Always, the sea releases its debris. We can see it on the beaches and in the fishermen’s nets.


Purification is the goal. It is during Pisces time that we engage in the fasting and penance of Lent. We are preparing the space for the fresh birth of Aries at Spring Equinox.


The night force is now in its closing phase, and all the remaining ghosts must be cleaned out if we are to become agents of universal wholeness.


Our imaginations open. We touch the grand symphony of the spheres. As we strengthen our inner focus, our purpose can become clear. In Pisces we need to align ourselves with spirit; if we fail to do this, confusion and chaos result.


As our sensitivity is increased, as we refocus around our spiritual center, we find a new strength to act, and that strength is generated through love. In Pisces we will be drawn to whatever we love the most, and if we focus our love on our true purpose, we will draw to ourselves opportunities for growth and success. Love is the greatest of all healing powers.


In Pisces we can appreciate the poetry and beauty of life. We have a restlessness to become part of the good, the true, and the beautiful which persist through time. The eternal verities draw us.


As we detach ourselves from one time and place, we can tune into all times and places. As we open and listen to our own deepest selves, we become attuned to all of life. We become aware that we are connected with one another in one vast web of life, and what happens to one part affects all the parts. We thus develop compassion and true humility.


Examples of Pisceans with an ability to see the whole combined with a strong sense of purpose are George Washington, the Father of our Country, James Madison, the Father of the Constitution, and Ralph Nader, who has been behind most of the environmentally friendly legislation which Congress has passed in the last 30 years, including the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. The Best Beverages To Drink For Amazing Sleep Every Night


Have you ever noticed that certain liquids make you feel energized while others cause you to feel sleepy? Well, that’s because the drinks you consume really do affect your level of alertness and the quality of your sleep.


As a Ph.D. diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine, I’ve devoted 35 years to the study of human sleep and clinical sleep disorders. Here are the drinks I recommend avoiding for better shut-eye—and the beverages that will help boost your sleep:


The best drinks to boost your sleep:

Cherry juice in the evening may help you fall asleep faster. Night workers may also benefit from drinking tart cherry juice in the morning to help them sleep.


Chamomile tea
and passionfruit tea with a little honey, 90 minutes before bedtime, may make your sleep more restful.


Milk, 90 minutes before sleep, may also help you fall asleep (if you’re not lactose intolerant). Whether you warm it up or not is a personal preference—it has no effect on milk’s sleep-inducing properties, which are tied to the essential amino acid L-tryptophan.


Water is important to drink throughout the day for optimal health. However, drinking water right up until bedtime will stimulate your kidneys and you’re likely to wake up multiple times in the first few hours of sleep.

Of course, the initial effect of alcohol is typically a more relaxed and sleepy state. But alcohol near bedtime is actually disruptive to sleep. Many people will drink alcohol in the evening to relax after a stressful day at work and find themselves drifting off to sleep in a chair while watching TV. Depending on how long they sleep in the early evening, they can experience a lot of difficulty returning to sleep when they finally decide to go to bed for the night. Evening napping disrupts your internal clock’s timing of the main sleep period later in the night.


Some people specifically use alcohol as a sedative. And yes, they fall asleep fast. But once the alcohol has been metabolized—maybe three to four hours into sleep—they abruptly awaken and find it difficult to return to sleep. If they do manage to get back to sleep, the remainder of the night is typically characterized by fitful sleep with frequent awakenings and intense dreaming. The sleeper wakes up groggy, tired, and unrefreshed despite having been in bed for a full seven to eight hours.
Nighttime alcohol can also induce snoring in a sleeper who does not normally snore and increases the risk of obstructive sleep apnea.

Caffeinated coffee and soda are widely used for their ability to promote alertness and energy level. Unfortunately, the stimulant drug effect of caffeine is short-lived, and when it wears off in four hours, most people experience a fatigue or sleepiness rebound, which encourages only more caffeine to re-energize.


And so the cycle goes: larger and larger amounts of caffeinated coffee at three- to four-hour intervals throughout the day. The problem is that the stimulant effect of caffeine also increases your heart and respiratory rates, making you feel anxious and jittery right up to bedtime.


Heavy daily caffeine consumption and caffeinated drinks close to bedtime are very disruptive to falling and staying asleep in most people. Afternoon and nighttime caffeine will also aggravate any restless-leg symptoms you may have. Restless legs are uncomfortable creeping, crawling sensations in your calf muscles when you are sitting or lying still that force you to keep moving your legs. These are the folks who are constantly moving their legs and shifting their positions around during meetings, movies, or plays. Restless-leg symptoms tend to increase over the day and are particularly severe during the evening and at bedtime. If you have restless legs, consider eliminating caffeinated beverages altogether or at least after lunchtime.


How to cut down on caffeine: Switch to beverages that are half-caffeinated and half-decaffeinated. Confine your caffeine consumption to mornings up through lunchtime, with only decaffeinated beverages later in the day. Aim for a daily target of 10 to 12 ounces of caffeinated coffee or tea by the end of two weeks.

When it comes to getting your best sleep, keep in mind that what you drink is just as important as when you drink it. Stop all caffeinated beverages after 2 p.m., and avoid alcohol before bedtime. Drinking tart cherry juice or chamomile or passionfruit tea with a little honey or milk 90 minutes ahead of bedtime may help you relax and fall asleep faster. Finally, stop drinking fluids one hour ahead of your bedtime—you’ll minimize sleep disruptions in the first few hours, when your sleep is typically deepest and most restorative.
