💔 "Hawai'i No E Ka 'Oi" 💔

While I may have left my heart in San Francisco, since I lived in the Bay Area for 28 years, I most definitely left it in Puna, on the Big Isle of Hawai'i, when I visited this very area in 1998, including a guided night trek to the lava flow. 💔 Be safe, Hawai'i dwellers!  Prayers and much Aloha to Pahoa, Leilani and all of Puna on the Big Isle, and all residents affected in the Islands region! ~PB

The Hawaiʻi Lava Flow Animal Rescue Network (HLFARN) was created to serve as an informational hub for those needing assistance with pets and livestock during the 2018 eruption of Kilauea on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. In addition to information, HLFARN provides support, volunteers, and donations directly to evacuees, Hawaiʻi Island non-profit organizations, and government agencies.
Please help us to operate as efficiently as possible to find fast and safe help for animals. So when you post or reply please indicate -
🐴 WHERE are the animals that need help located, give us area and address if possible
🐶 WHAT kind of animals need help and how many?
🐈 In what condition are the animals?
🐄 Will there be a truck or trailer needed?
🐷 Time and date
🐐 Contact phone number
🐔 Is owner present or has she/he been contacted?

TAGGING TEAM MEMBERS:
We are working hard to build a strong team and get better organized every day. Please don't tag our team members on the ground all the time, they need to drive, find the address, which can be tricky, and of course handle animals. So constant tagging distracts them. Try to communicate with us, we are constantly updating the various resources and information we gather.
We appreciate any resources you can share with us, insights to get more efficient and possible inside information from other grass root volunteer groups you participated in in other emergencies.
We are here to help the animals in need and support all organizations who have the same focus and intention.

Fissure 17 and 18 still real active but starting to slow down from yesterday and this morning. Lava is just about a mile away from highway 137 and moving in the direction between Kapoho vacation land rd and Ahalanui beach park. The flow that was heading toward highway 132 slowed down tremendously and is located around 150 yards from the highway. Aloha everyone and stay Classy Puna!!!!

Earthquake Animation: Kilauea 2018

Published on May 13, 2018
The NWS’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) mitigates tsunami hazards in Hawaii produced by large, distant earthquakes throughout the Pacific Ocean but PTWC also issues warnings for tsunamis generated by earthquakes within the State of Hawaii itself. The last such dangerous tsunami was generated by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake on the Big Island of Hawaii in 1975. Small earthquakes generated by volcanic activity are far more common, and typically have a magnitude less than 3.0 and occur a few times a day. That changed on the afternoon of April 30. 2018, when an earthquake “swarm” began such that earthquakes started to occur far more frequently, up to 10 per hour. This animation begins on April 21, a day before the lava within the "Overlook crater" within Halema`uma`u overflowed on to the crater floor before retreating back below the rim on April 27. Then on April 30 the eruption at Pu`u `O`o ceased and its cone partially collapsed, an event that coincided with the start of a swarm of volcanic earthquakes on Kilauea's East Rift Zone, a feature extending from the volcano's summit that carries magma underground through its flank. Eruptions can take place anywhere along this rift zone as well as at the volcano's summit. Earthquake occurrence then moved northeast along the rift zone away from the summit, suggesting the movement of magma below ground in this direction. Magma reached the surface and erupted as lava on the afternoon of May 3 and is still ongoing (13 May 2018). Since the eruption began the frequency of volcanic earthquakes has dropped to about 1 per hour. However, tectonic earthquakes that result from motion on faults became more common since the eruption, many larger than magnitude 4.0 with the largest having a magnitude of 6.9 on the afternoon of May 4. Though PTWC monitors all earthquakes in Hawaii, including this swarm, the primary responsibility for mitigating volcanic hazards rests with the USGS’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, who publishes updates daily and advises local emergency managers. Ikaika Marzo mentioned in his update this morning that it is being determined that what has erupted thus far is still from the 1955 eruption. Stated that he was told when Puʻu ʻŌʻō lava does reach the surface, it will be obvious and the event could be big. Also important to note that while in his video he states he was told that a new fissure opened where Fissure 6 was at Pohoiki Rd and Leilani Ave or just east of the intersection, HVO has now stated it is a reactivation of Fissure 6, not sure how they came to that conclusion. Interesting as well he states that there are several other fissures that are flowing up-rift, spewing all over the place.

  2. There are NEW fissures that turned into LAVA GEYSERS 75 FEET WIDE GUSHING LAVA 100' INTO THE AIR, RESULTING IN A LAVA RIVER CONSUMING A LARGE PART OF PUNA. ON MY FB PAGE i SHARE VIDEO UPDATES BY LOCALS, AND THIS IS WHY:

    https://www.facebook.com/phoenix.boulay/posts/2470266446332570

If you are wondering why I am so obsessed with the lava/volcano so far away, it's because I have experienced the lava up close and personal, in 1998, and felt it's mesmerizing and transformative power....which is hard to describe, but it felt ancient and familiar. I also was so drawn to the Aloha way of life that I dreamed of moving to the Big Isle in this very area that I had visited, near Pahoa, known as "Puna"..

In fact, in 1979, I was on my way to go live in Hawaii with a boyfriend, but after we trekked cross country, we decided he should go without me, and because I had a sister living in San Francisco Bay Area (where I met this guy visiting her the year before) I ended up sleeping on her floor, getting a job right away and my own studio apt. 6 months later. (BTW my rent on a small Russian Hill studio on Hyde Street with cable cars outside my door in 1979 was $250-/mo, 1/4 of my paycheck!) My how things have changed! I lived in the Bat Area for 28 years, returning to Massachusetts in 2005 and again lived with my sister in J.P.
    😱
I became a massage Therapist in 1998, but to my dismay, I learned that if I wanted to do massage in Hawaii, I would have to attend their schools, which meant not only moving there, finding some sort of work and housing, (both challenging) and paying for school again (which i later had to do anyway when I loved back to Boston.) These decisions have kept me in debt for a long time, alas, because I insisted on doing what I love and what I am good at for a living...although there is no guarantee of thriving in this profession. However, if there is a will, there is a way...I am not giving up yet. I only wish I could help more people.

Blessings and Protection to all affected by the volcanic activity and lava fissures and flows, forever changing life as it was known. 💔
