IN MYTHOLOGY, the god Uranus was ruler of the universe. His name means "the sky crowned with stars," and he was often called Father Sky. Most Greeks believed that Uranus had no parents, but emerged from Chaos, the primal form of the universe. In astrology, we know Uranus by many aliases: the god of the Starry Heavens, the god of Chaos, and the ruler of Higher Consciousness and the Divine Mind.

Uranus commands the astrological stage throughout the month of May -- even on days when he is not actively interacting with other planets -- due to his being at the threshold between Aries and Taurus. Whenever Uranus changes signs, which happens every seven to eight years, it's a bit like shifting gears when the car is not yet up to speed. We can feel out of control, with lots of jerking and stops and starts. Life can be more than a little chaotic, requiring us to continually recenter and re-balance ourselves.

THIS UNCERTAINTY has its higher purpose, of course. It allows us to conceive of life in new ways. It requires us to go within for answers and grounding, rather than depending on externals to provide what we need. It also encourages us to access higher realms for ideas, instead of relying solely on our conscious minds to conceive of solutions.

In her book Mythic Astrology, astrologer Liz Greene writes that:

"Uranus embodies our need to see beyond disparate events and objects, and glimpse the workings of the greater whole of which we are a part. Discovering such a perspective, especially at critical junctures in life, can be as nourishing to us as food. Without it, we stumble through life blind and fearful, unable to understand the deeper thread of meaning that links our life experiences.

"Uranus may also be seen at work on a collective level, reflecting our universal human longing to know where we are going and why. The great turning points of human history occur, not because of the actions of one individual, but through the power of ideas which break forth from the collective psyche and find an appropriate human mouthpiece."

Uranus will enter Taurus on May 15, the same day as the New Moon and Mars' ingress into Aquarius. More on this shift point in next week's Journal.

THIS COMING WEEK is dominated by aspects involving Mercury, starting on Monday when the Messenger Planet squares Pluto. Words can be powerful weapons, and with this aspect, we are more abrupt and less tactful than we'd like. Deep-seated resentments and unconscious motivations may drive internal thoughts and external communications.

These themes linger into the next day, when Mercury aligns with Eris, the goddess of Discontent. With a Sun-Jupiter opposition also in effect on Tuesday, passions are heightened and (even more) secrets are revealed that undermine the stability of the familiar.

PARTNERSHIPS AND AFFILIATIONS go through a transition this week, no doubt under pressure from the miscommunications and missed connections indicated by Mercury aspects. A Venus-Neptune square on Monday means that friends and allies experience disillusionment and dissatisfaction when expectations are not met.

Venus then moves into position to form a yod or "finger of god" configuration with Jupiter and Pluto. This formation will be strong Wednesday through Friday, and puts relationships -- and perhaps financial dealings -- through the wringer as we figure out who we can really trust and rely on.

Thankfully, the Sun is in harmonious trine aspect with Pluto on Friday, enabling us to make the kind of substantive changes that are necessary, even if they cause instability in the short term.

NEXT WEEKEND is likely to be a blur, when everything is moving so quickly, it will be hard to keep track of where we are from moment to moment. Mercury first squares Mars, initiating another round of disagreement and confrontation, and then aligns with Uranus to increase rebelliousness and a devil-may-care approach to whatever issues have arisen.

In essence, Mercury will be activating the effects of the Mars-Uranus square that occurs on the following Wednesday, May 16. This means that the themes we work with next Saturday and Sunday will likely escalate into the week that ensues. They will also be a major factor in changes that will occur in the next lunar cycle that begins on May 15.

IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK: This is a transformative year for you, Taurus. Although your fortes are consistency and practicality, you will be exploring themes that take you into deeper emotional realms. What you discover about yourself and your motivations will enrich your life and help you know what direction to take from here. Your main challenge is likely to be letting go of attachments to the familiar, so that you can recreate yourself in more vibrant form -- much as if you were changing the paints on your palette from pastel colors to emerald tones.

In light,

Pam
