THE LUNAR CYCLE that began in spectacular fashion on May 15 reaches its climax in the Full Moon this week. The lunation perfects on Tuesday at 7:19 a.m. PDT (2:19 p.m. GMT), at 8°10′ Sagittarius.


All Full Moons represent a time of culmination, when a process that began with the New Moon bears fruit and projects come to fullness. At the same time, emotions are usually heightened as we work with the polarization of the Sun and Moon, complicating matters but helping us reach new levels of self-awareness.

THE MOON is aligned with the fixed star Antares at the time of the lunation, acting as a focusing lens for that star's energy. As a red star, Antares is fiery and dynamic, similar to Mars in its effects.

Most literature paints Antares in a rather negative light, giving the star reckless and destructive qualities. But as in all things astrological, we have a choice between the higher expression and lower expression of the influences we are offered.

This Full Moon can have great effect on our energy fields, with our choice being how we want to vibrate as its influence moves through us. We can choose to be combative, temperamental, and ruthless, or we can intentionally channel this energy and become more dynamically self-motivated in a positive, life-enhancing way.

IN HIS INTERPRETATION of the meaning of Antares, astrologer Roderick Kidston writes that:

"The issue with this star is not ill will, but the way it impels an urge for mastery. When this is directed toward self-mastery and the personal gifts cultivated as a result, it is very fine. If it stimulates unskillful behaviors and rouses the temptation to dominate or control, there can be problems.

"As with all of the great power stars, Antares asks you to be very self-aware and very mindful of how you treat other people. The Golden Rule does rule here! But with the reservoirs of strength available to you via Antares, you can afford to be generous, and a force for good."

OUR CHOICE with this Full Moon can be as simple and immediate as going for a run to release frustrations instead of venting our anger on others. Or, it can be a multi-layered and life-altering decision to utilize our innate assertiveness in a more productive way going forward.

There is strength in this Full Moon, once we harness and direct the more impulsive, instinctive side of our personalities. As the DarkStar Astrology website says about Antares:

"If this brave, fearless spirit is channeled in the right way, then its energy can help move mountains. All energies are important in our Universe, it's just a question of balance. Antares is needed when we get too compliant and accept others' modus operandi too readily. This red star shakes us out of our complacency."

If this "shaking us out of our complacency" sounds somewhat familiar, it's because it's also one of the effects we expect of Uranus' journey through Taurus. We're starting to see a major theme develop for our times, confirmed by more than one astrological event.

MOST OF THE OTHER planetary aspects this week fall into the category of shorter-term influences that contribute to our daily experience but do not strongly affect our greater trajectory.

For instance, Mercury represents how our thinking and communication processes are helped or hindered on a day-to-day level. When Mercury trines Chiron on Wednesday, we have opportunities to use the healing power of words. On Friday, a Mercury-Mars trine encourages us to put plans into action, but we can inadvertently provoke power struggles if we don't take others' opinions into account (Mercury sesquiquadrate Pluto). Saturday could be another challenging day for conveying a clear message, thanks to a Mercury-Saturn quincunx that brings up resistance from those who feel judged or controlled.

ON SUNDAY, two aspects occur that have a slightly stronger effect, filling in pieces of the bigger puzzle. The first is an opposition between Saturn and the asteroid Pallas Athene, which challenges us to be empathetic but also to maintain our boundaries.

The second aspect is a quincunx between Pluto and Ceres, who were adversaries in mythology and so often have different perspectives to bring to the table. With this aspect, attempts to control another's self-expression are met with strong resistance, and may even disintegrate into power struggles. The challenge is to let go of our attachments and expectations, and to understand that endings are the first step to a new beginning. 
 
IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK: This year provides opportunities you to become more involved and invested in your own creative self-expression. You will find life much more satisfying if you live more in the moment and allow yourself to play, especially if you have the tendency to overthink decisions or to spend too much time in your head. At the same time, you will no doubt be taking relationships -- whether existing or prospective -- very seriously this year, and may make important decisions in this area.

OUR FULL MOON next Saturday is the energetic crest of the lunar cycle that began on May 6. The New Moon on that day was in Taurus, and offered us the opportunity and incentive to begin to recreate our lives so that they are more in sync with our deepest values. It also called us to simplify our lives so that space is made for the new creations to grow.

Over the past 10 days, and in the next few days leading up to Saturday's Full Moon, we are encouraged to continue our dedication to these goals. Luna travels through two other signs this week before coming into fullness in Sagittarius; this journey provides support for us first to re-balance ourselves emotionally and find greater internal harmony with the past (Libra) and then to dive more deeply into our knowing of what we truly desire and what energizes our passionate involvement in life (Scorpio).

BY THE TIME of the Full Moon itself, at 2:14pm PDT (9:14pm GMT) on Saturday, having done our work of preparation, we will be primed to take full advantage of the insights and activation being offered as the Sun and Moon oppose each other in the sky.

The Moon is aligned with Mars for the lunation, increasing our confidence, conviction, and courage -- but with Mars now retrograde, this alignment also means that before we take action, we must make sure that our aspirations are consistent with our spirit's intentions.

GIVEN THAT MARS is retrograde in Sagittarius, we may benefit most by focusing the energy of this lunation in clearing out old beliefs and seeing where we have spread ourselves too thin. This is actually in keeping with the original intentions of simplification and value clarification set with the Taurus New Moon two weeks ago.

If we first do this clearing and consolidation, our energy will then be much clearer and cleaner -- which means the outward actions we ultimately take will be that much more aligned with our deeper truth, and therefore that much more supported by our higher selves.

THE SABIAN SYMBOL for this Full Moon emphasizes the powerful forces that accompany Mars' involvement in the lunation:

"White-capped waves display the power of wind over sea: the mobilization of unconscious energies under the pressure of superpersonal motives."

In his interpretation of this symbol, astrologer Dane Rudhyar writes:

"In symbolism, the wind is associated with spiritual dynamism. The stirring of deep energies this dynamism produces obeys cosmic or superpersonal rhythms, the power of which is irresistible."

It may be that we will be compelled to take action in some way with this Full Moon. In fact, many people will likely be feeling very restless and impatient, and find it difficult not to act instinctively. But again, it appears to be very important that when we do take action, we "obey the cosmic rhythms" that guide us from the higher realms.

THE SUN adds additional insights into the New Moon themes through its close alignment with the asteroid Vesta. This celestial body represents our capacity for dedication, specifically to our spiritual path -- much as the vestal virgins fully dedicated their lives to their sacred devotions.

As the Sun and Vesta conjoin in Gemini for the lunation and for the two days that follow, we become more serious about our commitments, and desire full agreement with our spiritual purposes. It is important to pay close attention to our thoughts, and to know that even unspoken words carry power and influence. With Vesta and the Sun opposite Mars and the Moon, our thoughts and words can serve either to inspire or alienate.

This alignment between the Sun and Vesta may be especially helpful for those who do telepathic work, communicating either with other physical beings or with those who are now in other dimensional realities. A trine aspect between Sun/Vesta and the asteroid Pallas Athene amplifies our capacity for healing and receiving inspiration through these activities.

Any actions or statements used to manipulate others for selfish gain WILL backfire on you in a big way. This is a positive, uplifting, transformative energy - use it as such to clear the debris and create the life you were born to live.

Hello friends. Can you believe the year is already almost half over? It indeed has been flying by, but not necessarily because we've all been having fun. Last month especially, that may not have exactly been on the agenda. Many folks may be feeling what I affectionately call "cosmic whiplash" from the intensity and Mercurial mischief of last month.

As I focused on the energies of the month, I heard the words, "Maiden Voyage." In many ways we are in uncharted territory, and that is both exciting and a bit frightening. We have gone through so many changes recently that we may not fully recognize ourselves yet. The month ahead is a time of integration of all that we have learned and experienced in June. As per usual, the first and second halves of this month will have a decidedly different flavor to them. July 1-16 will be more inward and will be a good time for introspection, rest and to fully utilize the healing gifts of the Sun in Cancer. July 16-31 the energies will begin to ramp up with July 16-22 being the more "hot button" period of the month, with Sun and Jupiter in Leo introducing a more dynamic energy and creative flair into the mix.

I thought the Rocky Horror quote was perfect for the energies of this month. Use the lunar and dreamlike qualities of the Sun in Cancer (on it's way to the Full Moon) to dream or envision our goals and intentions. By the time we get to the aspects later in the month especially Jupiter in Leo, we will be more prepared to "take our act on the road" and BE what we choose to manifest.

Giggling Buddha (aka Merle Smith) used to say, "You can never really help anyone else." I didn't really understand what he meant by that for a long time, but now I do. We can provide support services so to speak for others, but they themselves must do the personal work to change their circumstances if necessary. As usual I'm not entirely sure of why that floated in, but since I was focusing on the energies of July I chose to include it.  I do know that June for many people was difficult, and in some ways rather brutal. I made a joke about taking the first two weeks of July as a "Psychic Tourniquet," especially if you identify as empathic and/or highly sensitive. Though it was funny, it's also true. Check up on psychic "bleed outs," especially in areas where they might not usually be expected and tend to yourself accordingly.

Though we have many aspects occuring, I feel that the Sun in Cancer and the cosmic weather in general will be tempered a bit, especially when compared to last month. The most significant aspects being: Saturn stationing Direct on 7/20 (this Cappie will especially breathe a sigh of relief!) Uranus stationing Retrograde on 7/21 and Jupiter moving in the sign of Leo on 7/16. We will be getting into more detail with each of these monthly aspects at this page as they occur. We also have an ongoing Saturn-Uranus quincunx which will present a subtle background energy of the push-pull. "Should I stay or should I go?" It's best to not make hasty or rash life decisions, but to see how events continue to play out this month.

The upcoming Full "Thunder" Moon in Capricorn promises to be rather a big deal, doing some preliminary research on the Sabian and other symbols associated with it. I will be writing a full report on it to be posted by 7/11 here and also at my blog.
