July Review
July
was an intense month. The eclipse energy stirred deep into relationship
(how we relate in many different ways). Anger surfacing was a
consistent theme. Even if the anger is righteous, holding onto it or
allowing it to continue harming is unproductive and unhealthy. Anger is
as valid as any other emotion, and can be a transformative wake-up call
as you recognize that it shows a feeling of victimhood surfacing that is
calling for internal shift into empowerment. Then a deeper level of
connection to life is available. If someone is spewing anger, healthy
boundaries are in order. Boundaries were a big issue that was up for
healing in July.
August Energies – Heart Family
June, July
and August Energies are entwined in a deepening of connection.
Connection is just another word for family. From the Earth Family of
June, to the Universal Family of July—we meet in the middle of the Heart
Family in August. What a reunion!
In essence, these months have
been about strengthening and clarifying the Merkaba; our spiraling,
spinning vehicle of Light, shown as two opposite triangles, yet that is
the simple geometric version.
August is the point of power between the two opposites—you. The catalyst.
In
your presence, the past and the future meet. These months are shifting
us into more alignment with the universal laws of the subtle realm. One
of those important universal laws is Time. When you embody your
presence, the circular nature of Time becomes whole within you. The

It's the Disseminating
moon phase and a time to share and a time to learn. We have shared this
video before, but its importance seems to keep showing itself as the
vision that is offered keeps coming true.
Mercury is retrograde between 9th April and 3rd May 2017 (GMT). Beginning in grounded and consistent Taurus and retreating into impulsive and instinctual Aries on 20th
April, it highlights where we set anchor and strive to remain when in
fact we should move on through. Conditions maintained through fear,
laziness or uncertainty will become increasingly problematic in the
weeks and months to come. This Mercury speaks of the need to trust our
instincts over and above the reason of ‘common sense’ logic. There
exists great mystery within this process. We may find ourselves thinking
in ways we never have before, considering options that have seemed too
outlandish to contemplate. We may encounter new sides to our self which
take some getting to know and whilst we can sense their potential, to
others they may feel like a threat to the status quo. Likewise we may
see changes in others which unsettle our own sense of how things ‘should
‘ be.
The developmental arc of this retrograde curves towards the final
week of April and the first two weeks of May, which takes us beyond the
end of Mercury’s retrograde journey. During this time, Mercury is
conjunct Uranus and (more briefly) Eris in
Aries, heralding unexpected revelations and fresh insight that could
turn our world upside down. The power of the spoken and written word is
amplified by this alliance, such that being considerate in our
expression whilst still striving to speak the truth is essential. The
notion that sticks and stones can break our bones but words do no harm
whatsoever couldn’t be more wrong at this time! Careless speech now
could trigger a chain of events that change the world as we know it, for
good or ill, so wise and compassionate speech aimed at building
bridges, not barriers, is vital. The more people who can remain open to
hearing difficult truths, facing unpalatable people and still seeking
reconciliation where only division has existed before, the better, for
this is a time full of raw power and it is we – every one of us – who is
charged with using it wisely.
If conflict seems impossible to avoid, we must act to de-escalate and
normalise rather than impose our will and insist on having things our
way. This doesn’t mean we must let ourselves be walked over, but seeking
even the most obvious common ground – we all breathe the same air, my
breath in your lungs, your breath in mine – can help take the heat out
of difference and create space for a meeting of hearts and minds. We
must allow fierce compassion to shape our choices and guide our way,
standing strong in the face of abuse of power and exploitation of the
vulnerable, whilst softened around the edges of divisive rhetoric which
sustains a polarised and hateful narrative. We are called to be
spiritual warriors now, emboldened not by weapons of war but by the
seeds of intrepid peace sown in the fertile soil of our daily lives.
This Mercury retrograde provides an opportunity to adjust our
alignment and review our allegiances to both people and circumstance. If
we regret choices made or unmade in recent months, rest assured they’re
not yet set in stone and the opportunity to choose again has arrived.
With relationships still in the spotlight we
may have to react in new ways to old dynamics, or adopt tried and
trusted behaviours in new situations. Finding the most productive
combination of past and present will help birth a dynamic and more
fulfilling future for all concerned, even if it doesn’t quite feel that
way right now!
Dear One, having a free and open heart on the Earth plane is not
always easy. As you open, you feel great joy and bliss. Then the pain
of the self and humanity becomes evident and you feel great sorrow. The
sorrow is not always obvious. Sometimes it becomes disguised as anger,
revulsion, indignation or righteousness. There is a time to feel sorrow
and there is a time to observe if you have allowed sorrow, in its many
forms, to saturate your hope. Hope is the impulse of the heart to keep
reaching toward change. Hope is a form of expectation, a beginning of knowing that change will occur. When the heart is free, hope is natural and grows into trust and then knowing.
A Free Heart is a heart that is strong enough to experience deeply and still have hope, trust and knowing. A Free Heart will understand the invisible strength that is trying to grow through the crack in the concrete vulnerability of a being. Knowing When
it is time to assist through action is a skill of understanding beyond
the moment into what will empower all involved. Sometimes that means
lending a hand, sometimes that means walking away as you lead the way to
a new potential.
Freeing the Heart means letting go of
obligation based in fear and opening to the service that supports
empowerment. It means looking beyond the moment and hearing the strength
that is seeking growth through a vulnerability. It means nurturing hope
in the self and another even while seeking a path of new potential. It
means trusting that life is benevolently supporting each being in ways
that show them they have human support, independent support and the
support of time, leading them to a new self. Is that self you?
As we sit to Blast Freeing the Heart,
we are perceiving humanity in the light of hope as each being is
growing through the support of our knowing that they are magnificent. We
are choosing the greatest support in a moment of change that embodies
Love’s grace of Knowing When. We are finding the path of least
resistance and allowing its flow to gently erode the barriers that keep
humanity from knowing the current of Love moving them forward. We are
the hope that is seeding the future as the waves of Love wash (k)new
strength ashore. Our Love Lights the way(ve). Blast on!
The chasm between where you are and where you want to be is exactly as your thinking makes it. Why make it impossibly wide when it can be easily jumped? ~ Creator
Do you feel, at this time, that you are reviewing old lessons, and seeing the past repeating in your life? Are these part of lessons you thought you finished and they are appearing again? Do you feel as though you are moving backwards instead of forwards? This is an important time for humanity, as you move through the close of one paradigm and the opening of another. The shift into new energies has been gradual until now, and each experience you see from the past is an opportunity to make it ‘more than’ what you have had before. You do not have to change everything, just add one more level of energy that makes it ‘more than’ the past, which brings you into a new paradigm and that is your leap of faith.
Every energetic frequency can be shifted at this time, and the energy of every experience is being reviewed, calibrated, and there is a choice for transformation and ascension, or to repeat the karmic cycle. If it feels tedious it is because you are bringing all of your experiences forward into a single moment, as you brought forward all of your karma into this lifetime, knowing that this would be the opportunity to transform those experiences. You are facing the final step into new ways of being. This is your ‘leap of faith’, the leaving behind of what you have known, which is based on the past and karma, and ascending into creation. The past is making its final appearance so you can make choices to be in that energy or to have an experience that is a leap of faith to move from the known experience of the past into the unknown potential of the present.
With each new level of frequency and vibration you experience, you are being presented with opportunities to review past decisions and choices, through a repetition of experience, so you can choose between the past and the present, the old paradigm and a different one. It is not a process of moving backwards, but one of reviewing your energy and the paradigms and dimensions you occupy, recognizing patterns that can be changed in order to create energy that fits within higher dimensional structures. Changing paradigms is a leap of faith that moves you from what you know to the unknown, it is a step forward that begins with a backward step.
Energy moves in a dynamic flow that continuously moves forward, and never moves backwards. If you feel that the past is replaying in your life it is because you are using the energy from an old paradigm to re-create the past. You can now learn to live in a new moment in the present but that requires a transformation, which is the path of ascension. You ascend from the old paradigm into a new one, from the past into an energetic step above it.
The challenges that many of you are having right now are repetitions of past experiences, brought to you so that you can make new and different choices. If you have chosen fear in the past, you now have an opportunity to choose from the point of love or courage. If your past choices have included anger, drama and chaos, you will now have an opportunity to choose peace and joy. There is never a time when the Universe moves ‘backwards;’ that is your perception of the situation. Even as you shift to higher vibrations, you will still have to experience this dimension, to live among the people with whom you share your lives. These experiences are merely an opportunity to introduce new frequencies and to offer new energetic connections that they can choose to embrace or not.
This is a time of great change and you are evolving and ascending, even though it may not appear that way at times. There is nothing that you are doing that is wrong or a mistake. Each choice that you make is the right choice for you, at the time that you make it. When you are ready to make a different choice, you make it at that time. Be patient with yourselves as you are experiencing tremendous levels of soul integration, each one opening new energetic portals of potential.
Each shift in awareness invites new frequencies and a new leap of faith into different dimensions of being. Remember to practice detachment and be the observer, avoiding judgment of any situation so it can unfold into the full range of its choices. Then you can see things as they are, without the filters of your emotions, beliefs, and perceptions, so that you can remember that you are powerful, in control, and the creator of your reality in all of its dimensions, realities, opportunities, and potentials. Embrace your leap of faith and trust that it will lead you to the joy, love, peace, and abundance that you desire.

10/7 ~ Sun (core-identity) ~oppose~ Uranus (disruption):
Be ready for surprises with this energy. Your routine will be disrupted, by you and/or others. Now is not the time to be practical, nor is it time to make any huge decisions. What it is best for is experimenting with alternative modes of expression. A part of you undergoes a mini-transformation under this energy's influence because it wakes up a part of you that is requiring expression now. You may not recognize it right away, but you HAVE CHANGED! You are a new "you" and it's time you acknowledged that fact, so everyone else can too.
Hang on - it's going to be a challenging - but hopefully enlightening - week! The first energy to contend with will have much to do with relationships. It creates very intense emotional experiences. This is more Pluto (transformative) energy, and, in this case, it's where love is concerned. So things in relationships will change - hopefully for the better, but if they were not built on solid ground to begin with, they may crumble completely. Stability is not part of the equation at the moment, so prepare for inevitable change. You've probably already felt it coming, but look out, because it is here now. The natural reaction may be to try to hold on to the person or relationship, don't give in to that temptation. Let Divine Order prevail - if it is meant to be, NOTHING can keep it from evolving to the next level, but if it is NOT meant to be, it is better to release it consciously and with the knowledge in your heart that it is best for all involved. And by all means, get the lesson so you don't have to repeat it in the next relationship!
10/8 ~ Mars (energy) ~trine~ Jupiter (enthusiasm):
This energy is GREAT!! This is good for all activity - physical and otherwise - you will feel uplifted and motivated and capable of twice the productivity as usual. Some say it's "lucky" but it is moreso your positive attitude during this time that attracts good things to you. You will have a great overall perspective of the "big picture" and can plan accordingly. The only caveat with this energy is to avoid being OVERLY confident where you feel invincible. Be confident, not cocky. This energy is very good for knowing what you need and being capable of making succinct decisions about the course which will get you there. Calculated risks are the name of the game!
10/10 ~ Sun (core Self) ~sextile~ Jupiter (optimism):
This energy is considered "lucky" but actually it is responsible for putting you in a more positive mind frame which is at the root of all success. Most anything you put forth should bear fruit. There is a LOT of support for all that you need, desire and deserve to finally manifest, or begin to manifest. You'll be pulled toward something greater than your Self alone. You may want to participate in a group thing, either for business or pleasure. This is an excellent time for workshops and seminars - going to one or presenting one yourself, if that's your profession. Pay attention - everything and everyone has something to offer that you may or may not have even known you were looking for!
10/11 ~ Venus (values) ~oppose~ Uranus (freedom):
Any time Uranus is involved, it becomes the "wild card" and hard to predict HOW things will unfold, but right now there is a push-pull between your apparent values and your unique individual self. Venus also represents relationships, so you may begin an unusual relationship or you may have something unusual happen in an established relationship. It is not necessarily a "good/bad" thing, as much as an unpredictable shift, which requires some compromise and integration. This energy works beautifully if your personal Truth and values are in alignment. It will be very disruptive if they are not. Be open and flexible, while looking for the win/win situation for all involved.
We begin October with Uranus and Chiron highlighting the need to find new ways to both accommodate and heal woundedness at the personal and collective levels. They have been working together on this issue since June, simultaneously exposing where we are most wounded and offering tools to further the process of healing and the embodiment of wholeness. The first week of October plays out against the backdrop of a square between Mars and Chiron which reminds us that the imperative to heal comes hand in hand with the responsibility to do so not for our own personal gain but to ultimately bring the collective back into a state of balance. The healing which occurs in our minds and hearts, bearing fruit in our own lives, is simply a tiny microcosm of the rebalancing required in the collective consciousness to which we each add our own unique resonance. In exchange for our contribution we receive back the resonance of the whole, such that it is, to fuel our journey onward. Thus it is in all our interests to ensure our offering comes from a peaceful heart and an awakened mind.
We hear a lot about healing these days, but less about accommodating woundedness: allowing it to be there without needing to remove it. This willingness to recognise the presence of suffering and refrain from interfering with it is a powerful theme at the beginning of this month. We’re not talking here about apathy or a loss of hope such that we believe we’ll never change or the world is already doomed. Instead the heavens point to the need for compassionate patience which allows ourselves and other people to be imperfect, in pain, struggling without needing to intervene to make things ‘right’. They remind us that ‘right’ is whatever is in the moment, not a particular version of life that we prefer. If we find ourselves suffering in the first week of October, be it physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually, the biggest mistake we could make is to assume this means something is going wrong or we haven’t ‘come as far’ as we thought. Now is the time to abandon all such value judgements and simply accommodate the pain for a while. Invite it in. Listen to it as we would to a small child with something very important to say. Make space for the pain and then just be. This is the best advice for the first week of October, for if we can do that we will contribute to a growing tide of patient compassion and compassionate patience which recognises that life is intensely complex, as are we, and healing takes time. We are multi-layered beings and all manner of elements throughout time and space must align in a healing way for every layer to shift and change. The application of astrology teaches this every day: that we are in a process with its own shape and cycle. Our responsibility is to honour the cycles, not try to circumvent them; to work consciously with them in such a way that we maximise the potential of each moment. Wanting healing NOW, when the cycle says wait a while and be gentle with the pain instead….that’s just more suffering. Time to understand we are not here to call the shots but to live them. There’s a difference…
On 4th October GMT Mercury begins its retrograde cycle which continues until its direct station on 25th October. In doing so it alerts us to the fact that we may have missed something recently which proves to be a vital piece of the jigsaw. In our eagerness for ‘progress’ we can easily overlook the obstacle which will bring us down in due course if we fail to allow for it now. In stationing retrograde at this point, Mercury puts the brakes on for a while and bids us to look back over where we have recently been to see what we may have missed, wilfully or otherwise. We may have eagerly told ourselves whatever it is won’t matter and if we ignore it it’ll go away, or we may not even realise we skirted around it in the first place, but as we join hands with Mercury retrograde we have the opportunity to cast fresh eyes over the recent past to see what needs our attention. Note, especially, recent emotional reactions: did something spook you but you just told yourself you’re being silly? Did you have a ‘feeling’ about someone, positive or negative, but you brushed it aside? Did you turn down an opportunity when every fibre of your being was shouting ‘Yes!’ because your mind said ‘Oooh no! Far too risky!’? Or perhaps you took the risk without listening to the caution of your heart which whispered ‘not quite yet. Just wait…’. The good news is: whatever Mercury wants us to see now it does so because it’s not too late to do things differently. This is our chance to revisit and reshape where necessary. And given the current theme of patience, that reshaping may take the form of simply waiting, quietly, alert but still, for a time more conducive to the re-shaping of our plans.
Between the 4th and 8th October we encounter a Grand Trine in Fire setting the heavens ablaze and our spirits with it. We can claim its fire as our own as we embark upon a month with much to teach about timing: ours, the divine’s and everything in between! With fire comes inspiration and optimism. Stocking up on these qualities will do us no harm and a quick inventory of the inner strengths we have to sustain us as we journey onward is a good use of this energy. However, it also brings impatience, over-confidence and a rash disregard for the natural laws which say if you jump off a cliff without wings you will fall and into a fire without protection you will burn. So balance in all things is required here, to reap the gifts of the fire without the consequences of disrespecting it!
On 8th October a total lunar eclipse occurs in Aries at 10:56 a.m. GMT. With the Moon conjunct Uranus, it speaks of liberation and awakening, shocks and surprises. Feelings may run high, but a positive alliance between Mars and Jupiter offer us hope and buoyancy to ride the waves, reminding us that alchemy requires high temperatures to occur! If you feel like you’re in the furnace at this time, know that the heavens are focusing their power on you not to melt you down never to be reformed, but to burn away the dross in order for the precious gifts of life to be revealed. However, despite the presence of Uranus, master of surprise and rapid change, the fruits of this eclipse will take time to ripen, with the processes triggered now culminating in March 2015, which is another good reason to embrace the message of patience shared at the start of this month! All things come to those who wait, and whilst this eclipse may provide some unexpected input we will not fully encounter its results for some time yet, so be sure not to judge its worth too soon. There remains much to be revealed in due course.
In the few days following the eclipse we have some fairly up-beat energies coming at us, with the Sun, Mars, Jupiter and the North Node aligning to remind us that commitment and faith stand for a lot when facing obstacles and challenges. They speak not of blind-faith and Pollyanna hope but of the deep faith born of one who has faced obstacles before, who has walked the path of awakening for a while and who knows its ups and downs, pitfalls and blessings. They speak of knowing that quick fixes are no fixes and that engaging deeply with the process of inner and outer transformation teaches us much about the nature of time and space and the cycles of life to which we are all subject. They remind us that our own lives are mere specks within this vast and endless universe and embracing this bigger perspective can do wonders for our ability to bear with their more difficult aspects in order to embody their greater blessings in due course. Indeed, at this time the heavens point not only to our own tiny lives but also to the vast infinity in which we live them, reminding us that the fruits of the present moment may await us in realms and dimensions yet to be revealed. Patience, once again, is the watch word now.
This emphasis on patience is not, however, to imply that nothing is happening! Beneath the surface all manner of shifts are taking place, although their fruits are yet to be revealed. Indeed, if we try to force a premature ripening we may end up crushing them rather than harvesting them in a timely way. From 18th October to the end of the month we see a conjunction between Venus and the Sun, first in Libra and then Scorpio, which invites us to enjoy the process right now. No matter what’s going on in our life, we are encouraged here to find the pleasure and identify with harmony rather than struggle, with peace rather than discord. This is easier said than done when life is throwing us curve-balls, but here we have the chance to step aside and choose time-out rather than grappling with on-coming forces too formidable to subdue. It can feel almost irresponsible to sit back and take a nap when so much is pressing for our attention, but that’s what we’re encouraged to do! Now is not the time for action but for creating space in which effective decisions can be made in due course, once we’ve gathered ourselves fully and recharged our batteries.
23rd October sees a partial solar eclipse in Scorpio (9:46 pm GMT) conjunct Venus, further highlighting the need for familiarity with the process of transformation such that we can relax and allow it to happen as necessary. This eclipse reminds us we don’t always need to be in the driving seat and there is much to be said for sitting back and enjoying the journey, even when things feel intense and we’re certain we SHOULD be doing SOMETHING! Any solar eclipse in Scorpio will take us into deep water, but this one offers us an oxygen tank and all the requisite diving gear to enjoy the descent rather than be terrified by it! It reminds us that it is frequently the willingness to embrace the darkness which sheds the needed light to navigate it. Resistance is futile, the heavens tell us now, and whilst this may sound like a message of doom in fact it is one of hope, for it means that we can let go, lighten up and still do the deep work needed for true rebirth. We don’t have to be depressed as we encounter the challenges. We can stay relaxed and even find the fun in it! And yes, that in itself is a challenge, but it’s one worth engaging with now. We may just discover a whole new way to ride the waves of change with a smile on our face…
Mercury stations direct on 25th October, completing its retrograde passage and beginning its return to where it was at the start of this month. What we have learned in the interim is important information if we are to make good on commitments formed in July, August and September. We have learned a lot about timing this month and we may have to rethink some of our previous plans to incorporate what we now know. We have also learned about attitude and the need for sovereignty over our own mind-set and approach to life. These lessons, too, will come in handy as we survey our plans for the future. Whilst life is not about to become easy-peasy, when we can maintain a greater level of ease regardless of what occurs we are in a far stronger position to forge ahead and create much needed change when the time is right. And with a steady and positive attitude we will know when that time is and be ready to act accordingly.
As the month (and the eclipse season) comes to an end, we are reminded that whilst it’s easy to feel the strain of life’s challenges, a shift of perspective can enable us to access peace in times of strife, pleasure in times of discomfort and hope in times of despair. Nurturing the ability to choose our inner landscape rather than have it dictated by external events is a powerful strength which can carry us through all manner of difficulties. In doing so it is not that we deny the pain or simply think a positive thought to counteract a negative one. Instead we acknowledge that life in all its complexity can give us great pain and great pleasure in the same moment, hope and despair as one, comfort and dis-ease as part of the same package. And we have a choice, always, whether we polarise into one or the other or embrace it all in its fullness and know life inside-out, with a shout of joy, a wail of despair and everything in between.

Now for the most potent of the transits for the week. You may encounter or even oppose powerful pressures and forces exerted upon you, both from without and within. The way you live and exert your energies will be tested today, perhaps forcing you to make radical changes in the areas of your life that you find are not working very well. The best way to use this influence is to let go of old patterns of behavior that recent events have demonstrated to be invalid. Holding on to them will only make your life more difficult, and if you give them up, you will have room for the positive creative changes that can take place now. This is a powerful combo, however, it has to be integrated and consciously expressed to yield the best results, otherwise you may miss an opportunity to discover some new gift or talent you have, or perhaps an improved philosophy that serves you better at this time. This energy gives you the necessary courage to try something new that may liberate you in some way you may have felt inhibited to initiate in the past. Because of the ease of this angle too, this new evolution to the next level should not entail you having to annihilate any other aspect of your life, you will just intuitively know it is time to change. It won't matter what others think or say either, because the prompting for change comes from within so take advantage of this time to experiment. You never know where it will lead.
I was standing in waist deep, crystal clear, warm water and I was afraid to dive in.
I wanted to experience swimming in the warm, beautiful Gulf waters. But I was afraid.
Longing to stop the thoughts that were limiting my life experiences, I
had waded out more than 100 yards from the safety of my beach towel.
Now I stood paralyzed. Waist deep I looked back…
All the fear-based thoughts that had been passed down for generations needed to be put to rest.
Growing up with many days on sunny shores did not mean I grew up
swimming in these waters. Instead I grew up being told all the reasons
why I should never swim here.
Story after story of bad things were passed down to me.
And so I have spent many, many days sitting on the beach, admiring the water, but too afraid to swim.
And now I longed to swim, and splash and play like I never did as a girl.
My guides had lured me into the water to cool off, so I had waded in
with my top still partially undone for tanning, and my sunglasses on top
of my head.
But now there was the taunt from my guides, “Dive in…dive in.”
The voices grew more powerful than the negative old tapes.
The desire to enjoy my life grew stronger than the desire for safety.
There was no time to make a wardrobe adjustment. I would have to
dive in with my sunglasses on my head and my bikini straps altered for
maximum sun exposure. I knew if I went back to shore even for a second
to fix my suit and take off my glasses I might not return to the water.
I pictured my dolphin friends around me, and put my hands over my head as if I was going to dive from a platform…and I did it.
I dove in and submerged myself, swam under the sea, and came up feeling reborn.
“Why oh why didn’t I do this years ago!?”
It felt so good I began to contemplate the years I could have been
swimming, instead of just staying safely on shore. But instead of
focusing on regret, I dove in again and again and again.
I retrieved my sunglasses from the ocean floor easily as the water
was clear. I returned them to my beach towel, retied and tightened my
swimsuit and rushed back in to the water for more.
Quite often the thing we fear doing most, will be the experience that will bring us the greatest joy.
It is imperative that we keep growing. To do so we must push past old limiting beliefs on a regular basis.
Do not accept the safe path. Erase the old tapes, and dive in to that which you long to experience.
Confront your own fears and find the joy that lives right on the other side.
Dripping wet I plopped down on my towel sometime later. Licking the salt water off my lips I was able to laugh at my old fears.
You are free to dive in – you are free to live the life you long to experience.
Dive in to whatever is calling you today.

So many children dream of fast cars and rocket ships, but few actually grow up to build them -- and change the world in the process.
The following script is from "Fast Cars and Rocket Ships" which aired on March 30, 2014. Scott Pelley is the correspondent. Harry Radliffe, producer..
Comparing the Tesla Model S to other cars is like comparing an iPhone to a desk phone. It is a technological marvel that scorches the pavement -- zero to 60 in four seconds. Tesla is another revolutionary idea from the mind of Elon Musk -- a 42-year-old Silicon Valley entrepreneur who built an industrial empire from the stuff of little boy dreams: fast cars and rocket ships. Musk is an idealist who told us he had to start his companies so that man could colonize Mars and save the Earth. His sister says it's like her brother traveled into the future and came back to tell us all about it. So what is the future like?
Apparently it's fast and smoke-free. The Tesla Model S is powered by 7,000 battery cells linked to an electric motor. No engine, no transmission, no tailpipe. As this company video shows, the dash is dominated by a computer that's constantly connected to the Internet. It has a fanatical following. There's a waiting list that Elon Musk is trying to shorten building 600 Model S's a week in this high-tech plant in Northern California.
Scott Pelley: I have heard a lot of people describe you.
Elon Musk: Okay, good, I mean, hopefully-- on-- on balance, hopefully, mostly good.
Scott Pelley: How do you describe yourself?
Elon Musk: I usually describe myself as an engineer that's basically what I've been doing since I was a kid. I'm interested in things that change the world or that affect the future and wondrous, new technology where you see it and you're like, "Wow, how did that even happen? How is that possible?"
How is it possible that Elon Musk could launch two impossible businesses -- SpaceX, a builder of rocket ships and Tesla which could be the first successful car company startup in America in 90 years.
Scott Pelley: How did you figure you were going to start a car company and be successful at it?
Elon Musk: Well, I didn't really think Tesla would be successful. I thought we would most likely fail. But I thought that we at least could address the false perception that people have that an electric car had to be ugly and slow and boring like a golf cart.
Scott Pelley: But you say you didn't expect the company to be successful? Then why try?
Elon Musk: If something's important enough you should try. Even if you -- the probable outcome is failure.
What's important to Musk is reducing greenhouse gases which he believes threaten the world. The Tesla will go about 250 miles on a charge. And Musk is building a network of charging stations where the driver pays nothing for a fill up. He hopes to make the stations largely solar powered one day.
Elon Musk: You can drive for free, forever, on pure sunlight. That's the, you know, message we're trying to convey. So even if, like, there's a zombie apocalypse and the grid breaks down, you'll still be able to charge your car.
Scott Pelley: So there's a zombie apocalypse warranty?
Elon Musk: Yes, exactly.
"Well, I didn't really think Tesla would be successful. I thought we would most likely fail. But I thought that we at least could address the false perception that people have that an electric car had to be ugly and slow and boring like a golf cart."
And, if you're running from zombies, it's good to know the Model S won the highest quality rating in
the history of consumer reports and has the government's highest safety rating.
Musk may be changing the car the way Steve Jobs changed the phone. Like Jobs he's a perfectionist in the art of engineering. His goal wasn't to show a profit but to reveal the possibilities. It is a desire to discover that's also behind Musk's other line of vehicles.
Only four entities have launched a space capsule into orbit and successfully brought it back: the United States, Russia, China and Elon Musk. This Buck Rogers dream started years ago when he had a nutty idea to fly an experimental greenhouse to Mars. But he couldn't. He discovered that the price of rockets was astronomical.
So now he builds his own.
Elon Musk: I had so many people try to talk me out of starting a rocket company, it was crazy.
Scott Pelley: What did they tell you?
Elon Musk: One good friend of mine collected a whole series of videos of rockets blowing up and made me watch those. He just didn't want me to lose all my money.
He never did launch that greenhouse but nowMusk is lofting commercial satellites and flying cargo to the space station for NASA at a fraction of the former cost.

Musk's fascination with technology dates to his childhood in South Africa.
Maye Musk: He just found everything interesting. He wanted to explore everything. He knocked histeeth out 'cause he was just falling off stuff. Kimbal too, actually. Yeah.
We spoke with his mother Maye, sister Tosca and brother Kimbal.
Kimbal Musk: Not a typical type of ambition. It's more he just needs to be constantly-- his mind just needs to be constantly fulfilled. And the problems that he takes on therefore need to become more and more complex over time in order to keep him interested.
He was interested in computers early. At the age of 12 he wrote the software for a video game and sold it. Against his parent's wishes he set his sights on the software capitol of the world.
Elon Musk: It seemed like the vast majority of such things came from the United States. I also, like, read a lot of comic books-- and they all seemed to be set in the United States. So it's like, "Well, this is a good place-- this is where-- I gotta go to this place."
He earned degrees in business and physics at the University of Pennsylvania and asked his brother to join him in California.
Kimbal Musk: When we moved to Silicon Valley we had nothing. So we actually lived in the office. And we would sleep on the floor in the evening and go shower at the YMCA the next morning. And then we would be ready to go before some of our employees would arrive, so they wouldn't think we were actually sleeping in the office.
In that office, Musk invented a program that gave step by step directions between addresses. That's common today in cars and phones but in 1995 it was magic. In four years he made $22 million.
Scott Pelley: Only in America.
Elon Musk: Right, only in America. Absolutely.
Next, he started an online banking firm that he grew into PayPal, a system for making purchases on the Internet.
Scott Pelley: And you sold PayPal to eBay for what?
Elon Musk: It was about $1.5 billion. So that-- that was-- it was a good outcome.
Scott Pelley: A good outcome?
Elon Musk: Yes.
His share was $180 million and he bet it all on Tesla and SpaceX. But at the age of 37, he hit rock bottom. His first rockets failed to reach orbit, and an early model Tesla roadster had quality problems.
Scott Pelley: In 2008, the rocket company is not going well, you've had three failures.
Elon Musk: Right.
Scott Pelley: The car company is hemorrhaging money--
Elon Musk: Yeah.
Scott Pelley: and the American economy has tanked in the worst recession since the Great Depression.
Elon Musk: Right.
Scott Pelley: What was that year like for you?
Elon Musk: And I'm getting divorced, by the way, add to that. That was definitely the worst year of my life.
That terrible year was captured in a documentary called "Revenge of the Electric Car." His plant was filled with flawed cars that couldn't be delivered.
["Revenge of the Electric Car:" Holy mackerel. Jesus! We have like an army of cars here. Like, Jesus! This is frightening. It's really pedal to the metal here. I mean, each month that passes is literally costs us tens of million of dollars we need to appreciate that.]
To save Tesla, Musk needed millions more from investors. His fortune was gone.
Elon Musk: When we'd call people and say, "Hey, would you like to invest?," they'd be angry that we just called. That it's like-- it's not like no-- no and-- no and-- you know, various expletives.
Scott Pelley: He was essentially broke.
Kimbal Musk: Oh yeah. In debt. More than broke.
Scott Pelley: More than broke.
Kimbal Musk: Yeah.
Elon Musk: I remember waking up the Sunday before Christmas in 2008, and thinking to myself, "Man, I never thought I was someone who could ever be capable of a nervous breakdown," but I felt, "This is the closest I've ever come." 'Cause it-- it seemed pretty-- pretty dark.
Toward the end of 2008, SpaceX prepared its fourth attempt.
Elon Musk: We were running on fumes at that point we had virtually no money.
Scott Pelley: So a fourth failure?
Elon Musk: A fourth failure would have been absolutely game over.
Scott Pelley: Done.
Elon Musk: Done.
Scott Pelley: SpaceX bankrupt...
Elon Musk: Yeah. It's bad enough to have three strikes, having four strikes is really kaput.
"I remember waking up the Sunday before Christmas in 2008, and thinking to myself, 'Man, Inever thought I was someone who could ever be capable of a nervous breakdown,' but I felt, 'This is the closest I've ever come.'"
But flight four was flawless and in Musk's world, it lit the darkness.
Then, as often, the week of Christmas became a time when little boy dreams are answered.
Elon Musk: NASA called and told us that we'd won a $1.5 billion contract. And I couldn't even hold the phone, I just blurted out, "I love you guys."
Scott Pelley: They saved you.
Elon Musk: Yeah, they did.
Scott Pelley: Financially and maybe even emotionally.
Elon Musk: Well, I'll tell you that was, that was definitely helpful, yeah.
Two days later, on Christmas Eve, Tesla's investors decided to pour in more money.
Scott Pelley: So you were saved in the period of three days by two completely unexpected events.
Elon Musk: Yeah.
Scott Pelley: Merry Christmas.
Elon Musk: Yeah, absolutely. That's for sure.
The rockets haven't failed since. His cargo capsule has docked three times with the space station. And in the California plant they're fitting seats for what they hope will be eventual manned missions. SpaceX is also testing a rocket that can be reused, softly landing on a column of flame. Another step on a longer journey.
Elon Musk: I'd love to have SpaceX be the company that brings humanity to Mars and I hope I see it while I'm still alive.
He's at SpaceX three days a week, two days at Tesla and weekends are at home with his five sons from his first marriage and his second wife Talulah whom he met in london.
Talulah Riley: It all happened very fast. We were-- we were engaged after, I think, sorta two-- two weeks of knowing each other. And I was 22 and it was-- there were all these boys. And it was-- which was the best part. And-- it was-- it was fast. And then we were in it.
Scott Pelley: You knew each other two weeks before you got engaged?
Talulah Riley: Something like that--
Scott Pelley: What was so attractive?
Talulah Riley: Well, he was very charming and definitely the most interesting and eccentric person I have ever met.
Tesla stock has rocketed up nearly 500 percent but that's not based on thecars he's selling -- that price is counting on the hope that Tesla will create an electric car at one-third the cost of the Model S which runs about $100,000. This is what stands in the way. This slab covered in plastic is the battery.
Scott Pelley: So this is essentiallythe bottom of the car. The front wheels would be there, the rear wheels would be right here. It fills up the entire bottom of the car.
Elon Musk: That's right.
This is how it fits into the bottom of the chassis. Trouble is the battery'sso expensive musk can't build a $35,000 car with acceptable range. To make Tesla successful, he must reinvent battery manufacturing. Musk has just announced a $5 billion factory to be built in the U.S. which, he says, will make more lithium ion batteries than all the other plants on earth combined.
Gambles like that have led a lot of people on Wall Street to bet against him--taking investment positions that count on Tesla stock to fail. But so far, those pessimistic investors have lost a lot of money.
Scott Pelley: What is it about you that seems to invite skepticism?
Elon Musk: Well, I think it's because we're doing these things that seem unlikely to succeed. And we've been fortunate, and at least thus far, have succeeded.
