THE PLANET MERCURY comes
to a standstill Monday evening, marking the beginning of its three-week
retrograde (backward-motion) phase. Most of us feel caution bordering
on dread when we know Mercury is about to go retrograde. Many can
recount stories of communication problems, computer issues, or traffic
detours that occurred when this messenger planet was moving backward,
and so we tend to feel uneasy as we enter this time.
And yet, there are benefits to be gained when Mercury is retrograde. It is true that some of them may come as the result of dealing with unexpected changes in our routine, but we don't have to wait until we hit a roadblock to take a moment to reflect on where we've been and where we may want to go next. ANOTHER BLESSING of Mercury's retrograde phase is the opportunity to revise a project or a plan we've been working on recently. We may already be aware that we haven't had the hoped-for results, or be feeling that something could be improved about our recent efforts. This opportunity for a "do-over" especially relates to issues we've been dealing with since May 4. It was on that first Monday in May that Mercury was at 4 degrees Gemini -- the degree Mercury will again reach on June 11, the date it goes direct. HERE'S THE TIMELINE we're working with: May 4 was the beginning of a process. Tomorrow, May 18, we begin our review phase, which will complete on June 11. At that point, we can start applying new solutions based on the new information we've uncovered, that are providing us with a clearer direction than we had before. By June 27, when Mercury again reaches its retrograde point of 13 degrees Gemini, we will have a much better overview of all that has transpired over this time. We should also be able to clearly see why we needed to experience the review process in exactly the way it unfolded. ANOTHER important planetary event this week is a Jupiter-Pluto quincunx, exact on Thursday. A quincunx aspect requires us to make adjustments, as we discover that continuing along our current trajectory may not bring us the results we want. This, of course, is an echo of the themes of Mercury's retrograde phase. Pluto also makes other aspects on Thursday -- a sesquisquare with the Gemini Sun, and an opposition with Venus. It will be especially important to monitor our underlying motivations with these aspects, and to be as clear as possible about what we really want. Otherwise, our instinctual reactions to events can easily throw us off-course.

Like any adventure into uncharted territory, this one is exciting but can also be frightening at times. At each turn, we observe new beauty but may also face disconcerting challenges. Navigating this new realm is a full-time job. Almost every day seems to provide new information or a new experience that requires us to adjust our course. We are continually pushed to move beyond what was once comfortable, to see ourselves through new eyes, and to see potentials for our lives that we perhaps had never dreamed of. And, Jupiter begins its year-long journey through Virgo, expanding our capacity for creating or expanding work that is spiritually fulfilling. - In SEPTEMBER, Saturn re-enters Sagittarius, providing support for us to create new forms in alignment with our highest ideals. We also have a Virgo Solar Eclipse and a “South Node” Total Lunar Eclipse in Aries designed to help us release the past and keep us moving forward. - In OCTOBER, the Libra New Moon contains powerful aspects to move us beyond old limitations, and to stir us into action. - In NOVEMBER, the Sun, Mercury, and Saturn join together in Sagittarius – and all three square Neptune -- to ground our vision in reality and to expose those dreams that are distracting us from our true path. - And in DECEMBER, Pluto and Uranus make a final push to get us out the door. Although these two planets will not repeat the exact square aspect, they will be close enough to provide another energetic nudge.
