NorthPoint Astrology Journal by Pam Younghans
Please note that this week's NorthPoint Journal covers two weeks instead of one. Please watch for the next issue of the journal on Sunday, May 18.
Week of May 5 to 11, 2014
ACCORDING to the ephemeris, we have just completed the most intense few weeks of 2014. In some ways, we can now look back and start to interpret and understand what we've experienced.
Yet change does not occur without ripple effects, so we will continue to work with the lingering influence of the grand cross for the next few weeks -- especially as the faster-moving planets interact with the four grand cross planets. And, the themes and issues brought into our awareness by the April eclipses are likely to be in our awareness (perhaps with decreasing intensity) for the next six months, until the next pair of eclipses occurs in October.
AS I REVIEW the motion of the planets for the next seven days, one thing in particular catches my attention -- there are five quintiles spread throughout the week. Quintiles occur when two planets are separated by exactly 72 degrees.
Quintile aspects are not considered to have as strong effect as some of the other aspects (such as squares, conjunctions, and oppositions), but having five in one week tells us we need to pay attention to what they mean -- especially since, synchronistically, 72 degrees is one-fifth of the 360-degree circle that defines the zodiac.
MY FAVORITE RESOURCE on the deeper meanings of aspects, astrologer Bil Tierney, writes this about quintiles and their association with the number five in his book Dynamics of Aspect Analysis:
"In esoteric astrology, the quintile is considered to symbolize an aspirant's creative soul alignment with the Will of the Cosmos. The Will of the awesome, inscrutable Cosmos is not easily channeled through the normally fragmented consciousness of the average individual still bound by the limited confines of his personality-centered will. Quintiles only fulfill their lofty, universal potential once we have become more self-realized.
"Quintiles seem to describe the potential of abilities normally considered exceptional or gifted, that originate from a deeper source within. They allow us to grasp a holistic overview, plus grant the power and single-mindedness required to bring such a rare perspective into sharper focus. For most of us, quintiles may only be active during dream activity, deep meditation, and other altered mental states of consciousness."
AS WE CONSIDER recent events and what we may learn from them, it seems especially fortuitous that we have so many quintile aspects this week. Certainly, it will be helpful to have assistance in bringing a more "holistic overview" into sharper focus.
And, it also makes sense that if we are to take advantage of these more subtle influences, we need to pay attention, be self-aware, take the time to listen to our dream messages, and spend time in meditation and other altered states. If we are "channeling the Cosmos" this week, we want to make sure we are in as clear and high-vibrational a state, and as "non-fragmented," as possible.
THE MOST IMPORTANT quintile this week is between Uranus and Saturn -- and the most important day, quintile-speaking, is Tuesday, when quintiles form between Uranus-Saturn, Sun-Mars and Chiron-Mercury. We will want to be especially conscious on that day, grounded and self-aware, to take advantage of the potentials for insight.
Uranus and Saturn are typically very different in their effects. Uranus is expansive and liberating, often bringing either breakthroughs or breakdowns, depending on our level of resistance to change. Saturn is conservative and limiting, helping us focus on what is practical, realistic, and in alignment with our ultimate goals.
With these two powerhouses working together in relative harmony through this week's quintile, our insights should be both forward-thinking (Uranus) and grounded (Saturn). We can also anticipate that we'll need both courage (Uranus in Aries) and a strong knowing of our own truth and motivations (Saturn in Scorpio) to take best advantage of the information we access.
Week of May 12 to 18, 2014
A FULL MOON and Venus aspects are the highlights of this second full week of May. The Full Moon is especially important, since it is building on the energies that were initiated with the Solar Eclipse on April 28-29. The Venus aspects draw our attention since Venus will be interacting with the four planets in our Cardinal Grand Cross.
The Sabian symbol for the Full Moon speaks to a time of resolution and integration after intensity:
"After having heard an inspired individual deliver his 'sermon on the mount,' crowds are returning home: The need to incorporate inspiring experiences and teachings into everyday living."
This integration includes our multifaceted experiences during the month of April, and also of the insights (hopefully) accessed through the quintiles of last week.
THE KEYWORDS for this Sabian symbol are "Challenge to Transformation." Here are more insights from astrologer Dane Rudhyar about the meanings of this symbolic image
"The great problem facing everyone who has had 'peak experiences' is how to assimilate what has been felt, seen or heard, and how to let it transform our everyday consciousness and behavior. The 'return home' from the high mountain, or from any 'upper chamber' of the consciousness, may lead to a sense of oppression by the normal realities of existence -- or, the soul that has been illuminated may retain enough of that light to transfigure every daily situation."
While it is true that the "high mountains" experienced in April may or may not have felt positive in nature, it is also true that they have opened within us the possibility of New Life. It is this potential and anticipation that this Full Moon reminds us of, as well as the importance of retaining and integrating the immense energies we have been working with.
IF YOU HAVE recently experienced an expansion of consciousness or awakening of some description, this week provides the realization that we must now utilize that heightened awareness in how we perceive our daily existence. There's something of a "chop wood, carry water" message here -- the truth of life being that our daily responsibilities continue even after episodes of enlightenment, and it is our attitude and perspective that makes the difference between "life before" and "life after" important events.
Perhaps this is why we see Saturn close to the Moon at the time of the Full Moon. Saturn always reminds us what is required of us as inhabitants of a physical plane. And yet, if we want our lives to bear testimony to our expanded awareness or other breakthrough, it is up to us to carry our energy in new ways, ways that more directly reflect the light within -- even if we're following the same (or similar) routines as before.
STARTING on Sunday the 11th, Venus begins her interaction with the four planets of the grand cross. The opposition to Mars is on that Sunday, the square to Pluto is on Wednesday, the conjunction with Uranus is on Thursday, and the square to Jupiter is on Sunday the 18th.
These are not new energies by now, so there may be fewer surprises in store. But, the integration we've been discussing may especially impact two areas of life ruled by Venus: our personal relationships and our values (including how we earn and spend money).
We will be especially restless this week with any relationships or ways of earning a living that we are no longer energetically aligned with. We may have breakthroughs, especially when Venus aligns with Uranus on Thursday, that shed more light on what we want to create going forward.
And -- with Mars going direct on May 19 -- we will soon have plenty of support for taking courageous steps into the New Lands we now hear calling us.
Blessings,
